How old does an engine need to be before you can LEGALLY run no cat converter?? I'm thinkin of a C20 XE if that helps.
Thanks

Although the absence of a cat doesn't necessarily mean a fail. Just that the test is more stringent for engines after that date.
You also need proof of the age of the engine if it differs from that of the car.

Isn't the age of the engine stamped on the side of the block?

The age isn't but the engine number is. Get in touch with Vauxhall and they can give you a print off to prove the ages of the engine.

If you mean there, no, that's engine number and model.
Number on the block also in that pic is part number.
Engine number could technically give date if you had the means to look it up, which the MOT tester won't.

Pop the oil cap off, theres a date stamp on the cam cap, It might not be accurate, but if it says pre 1992, the MOT man should be happy with that.
