Had this cable modem since it was installed by telewest before they were taken over by virgin, gota be a good 10 years old now.
internet has been dropping out alot recently, and ive been having to reset the modem every other day.
about a month ago, it started making a hissing noise. diddnt think anything of it, but now its quite loud and with me having to re-set it all the time i decided to take the cover off for a closer look.

after a bit of research i found that the hissing could potentially be a popped capacitor

this one looks a bit bulgey on top


recorded a quick vid of the hissing. need to turn your volume all the way up in the player to hear it

now, do i fit a new capacitor ( not even sure if its that one in the photo ) or should i just get a new modem. also, do i have to go through virgin to get one or can i just pick one up from somewhere like Maplins?

My god, tell them you want whatever they're latest wireless router is, don't go paying anything, it sounds like you're more than entitled.
