Is it possible to tell from a licence key on a COA what version of Windows it was for?

I've got a laptop here with a dead HDD but the COA is partially worn on the base of it, a new HDD has been ordered for it but I'd like to reinstall the version of Windows it came with ideally.

The COA looks like it might be either XP or Vista, definitely not older or newer than that TBH.

OK it has a code "X14-39682" which looks like Vista according to a Google search, just need to find out what version of Vista it is now!

Next question - how easy would it be to find out the missing letters in a licence key?

Can only make out some of the letters, and a Google search on what can be read doesn't bring up anything.

The ones that are missing aren't visible at all... COA is quite badly worn.

Thanks guys but the hard drive is completely dead, not readable by any computer or even via a USB hard drive dock.

Sam - if its Vista it will have SLIC information in the BIOS - the motherboard will have the version of Vista it is licensed to use hardcoded into it. You just need to get that up and running.

Install Vista Home Premium normally - then use Daz Loader 2.1, It will pick up the SLIC info from your BIOS and sort out the certificate and activate it. Many people assume Daz Loader just to be an illegal piece of software - but it's dead handy for situations such as these combined with the SLIC toolkit.

"It will install just the certificate and serial for users with an existing SLIC 2.1" - vital piece of info for anyone saying Daz Loader is an exploit rather than a tool.

I just sorted out a Dell Inspirion Duo shitty netbook where the label has rubbed off for Windows 7.

I've U2U'd the link to you just incase.

You can install any version on a Dell using a Dell OEM CD even if it's not licensed for that.

So if you install a higher one it'll activate anyway, meaning you are technically not licensed.
