My friend is getting an iPhone at the weekend and I said I'd help her set it up and get apps/music on it etc.. It's an 8GB iPhone 4 - will that come preloaded with iOS 4 or 5?
What i want to do is make sure it is on iOS 5 and activate it on her laptop (old Dell thing) and obv give her an Apple ID, then take it to mine and connect it to my laptop (Macbook) and copy over a load of apps and music etc., so she has a good selection. Presumably I just connect her phone then copy stuff onto it in the same way i did with mine?
What im not sure about is whetehr she can then sync with her laptop (as and when required) and it will copy everything onto her iTunes, or will it remove everything? i have an external harddrive, but i use it as a time machine and it is more of a back up than a hard drive (and WIndows wont recognise it), i guess the alternative is to get a hold of a large usb stick and copy on anythign i think she may want and take that to hers :/

not the case apps are locked to your apple id. music you'd have to either login on her apple id and sync but then they would be lost when she syncs on her laptop. its a pita

easiest way to do the music would be to send her the songs on cd etc, otherwise whenever she syncs with her dell it will wipe her collection. besides, 8gb is nothing if you are gonna load it with music

my macbook is an air ie no cd drive, otherwise that would ahve been the easiest way im thinking im gonna see if i can skank an 8GB memory stick (or even a 4GB one) and just take my laptop with me and see what she wants! as you say, 8GB isnt much but she'll only want a few songs on there and a few apps i think

Why don't you use a third party app (Winamp works with iPods, probably works with iPhones as well) to download the music from her iPhone? Then she can import it into her iTunes; simples!

Dom, wouldnt that mean he would need winamp on his macbook?
edit, actually i see what you mean, transfer form macbook to phone, then use winamp on her dell to pull songs off into her itunes, then sync with her dell

Pretty sure the AAC/M4A files on the iPod store ID tags, can always double check and use Senuti (http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/).
Russ - Exactly that, it's one of the reason why I use Winamp as it makes nabbing tracks off mates iPods a two-click operation (select Artist/Album on iPod library, right-mouse-click transfer).
