Last week my gearbox started whining when in gear, took it to a mechanic and said that the diff bearings need to be replaced really soon. 2days later, whilst driving the noise changed into what seems like banging metal. The noise is 'only' when moving and in gear. On idle it doesn't do it even if the car is moving. Any idea what it can be?

Car is an 09 Corsa D 1.4 Manual with approx 50,000miles.

i was told it could be clutch trust bearing... could it be?

does it change when you put your foot on the clutch?

there's a tiny whining noise which yes it stops when you dip the clutch... the banging noise only occurs when in gear and moving
