I take it they aren't known for being strong then

Done the job until now tbf.

How much am I looking at for set f pistons if decided to go for it?

It's 50:50 with opinions pretty much

i'm not saying i know everything you silly man. i'm just saying the added expense of buying new pistons is worth it when you've shelled out thousands on a lovely engine build.

generations car hasn't been built on a budget. it's a no expense spared project from what i can see. if it was billy bob i his smokey old mondeo, i'd say keep the pistons as it's not worth the money buying new ones.

but in this case, prevention is key considering the amount of bad luck the guy has had. preventing future problems isn't always 100% guaranteed but you've got a better chance of having no problems by sticking new ones in than used ones.

i don't doubt you've a good knowledge after 10 years in the motor industry. i've had 5 years and see the problems happen every day and see the after affects of tiny problems resulting in major chaos.

I think I autosprints RRP is £275, I also bought a set of bronze guides off him at the same time and he did a deal.

I'd re-use them, by the way.

Hope this doesnt end up in as a thread of arguments.

I will clean them up tomorrow and post more detailed pictures

Also, thanks Ben. Good to see you appreciate how much time and money hass gone into it. Feel on here alot of it doesn't get noticed.

What he said. Id be very suprised if you had any issues. If there is any after the rebuild id be looking at the quality of the worksmanship! Make sure the head bolt holes are dry and clean before you bolt the head back down

I cant see any chips? Tbh hundreds of thousands of people have cambelts snap and if every single one had to have a near on full rebuild there wouldnt be many getting repaired as people just dont have the money to do it. Theres next to no damage to the pistons so why change? Hed be doing it for the sake of it

I cant see any chips and the chaps already said its just debris from valves and taking the head off etc. New pistons would just be pure overkill imo

I've had an XE belt go on me, taking out 16 valves and 14 valve guides. I re-used the pistons because there was absokutely no sign of damage to the pistons after the wipe of a rag - but if he's talking about removing fragments of metal embedded in the piston / bits of the piston I'd say that's a whole different ball game

Ive seen an X14XE piston with screw marks on the top of it after a screw was accidently dropped down into the engine. The top of the piston had a few bits missing and screw marks etc on it.

The engine was built back up with said piston still in place and it ran fine.

Generation! out of the 20 to 30 snapped cam belts I've done, I've only had two that smoked
through ring lands being damaged! one I towed off motor way, the other I found out latter they been
trying to tow start it take them out, clean check and reuse mate.

They are ok,
I'd also whip them out and check them,
Also check no debris got down the side of the piston

But fact is 99% of the stuff autosprint supply are absolute cheap shite only fit for the bin.

Oversize valves that the heads fall off,
Valve spring retainers that split,
Pistons that can take less abuse that the standard pistons,
Etc etc.

I will be honest my pistons have loads of marks on them from were vavles have twated them and mine makes 198bhp so no prob in my apionion get um cleaned up and use them again

and now do you know why i constantly slate phill for being a engine builder my gran could do a better job

Based on those photos I wouldn't even make a decision.

They need taking out, cleaning and inspecting properly.

You can re-use a marked piston, same as you can replace on a precaution. Depends whether you want absolute (almost absolute depending how the rest of the job goes) peace or mind or whether you want to save a few hundred quid and gamble that on more work later.

I'd probably bodge it together which old bits which looked half right, but then if I was going that type of work it'd be on a car that didn't need to get me to work.

If its your labour and you have a ring tool, no harm whipping them out for a proper look and more photos.
