Under 10.6 you can enable native NTFS write support by changing the drives permission (via terminal). 10.7/10.8 also supports it but apparently it's 'unstable' hence why users recommend using NTFS-3G or MacFuse.
Same with Windows and HFS+ drives though, have to use something like MacDrive/HFS Explorer/Paragons HFS driver or if just want read-only access then the boot camp driver is floating around the net.
Rob_Quads - Just use Ext2 IFS.

Didn't realise it was meant to be unstable - been using my NTFS formatted USB pen with no problems here on Lion and Mountain Lion for a year now

This is annoying though, OSX can fuck off if I'm remembering to eject a disk before I unplug it

Was that just by changing (via terminal) the NTFS drives permission?
Haven't got L or ML but it works a treat on SL. Just a shame OSX likes to leave shite on the drive

Yeah those ghost files or whatever they're called that it always leaves is quite annoying and can take up valuable space on a USB stick for example.

Just plugged in and it worked - didn't realise there was meant to be compatibility issues until just now! Is annoying how it leaves hidden files about the place, hate it when software does that; Dreamweaver is a shit for that too.

Now doesn't like accessing the drive at all, takes minutes to show any folders then takes that long to show contents of a subfolder I've given up to post on here.
Drive works fine in windows. Ideas?

All the user of this mac is trying to do is open and edit some word and powerpoint files.
They've came across exactly the same problems I see all the time in work. Not sure where exactly they are so amazing unless all you want to do is open safari up to buy a new iphone.

Try NTFS-3G or MacFuse and see how you get on, although it looks like you can enable native support on 1.7/1.8.
Alternatively, if you only have read access, copy the file across and mail back to yourself - hassle, yes but it'll work.

Actually, just realised I get read-only access to NTFS. Seems that I've never had to write to my USB pen on my laptop in the past year of ownership
