Can't see the point in the divergence. Definitely looks with both the 5 and the mini that Apple are trying to fend off the competition by doing-what-they-do rather than convincing people they are 'innovating' in their usual way.
Also, these media events used to have at least a little bit of a surprise in them. Not sure whats happened with literally every last detail leaked well in advance!

The bigger demand/interest there is in a product the more leaks and people trying to find out whats going on. To begin with i.e. iPhone 1 / iPad 1 the customer base was tiny in comparison to what it is now.
There are similar leaks about other products but due to HTC etc producing so many phones its a lot more spread out (and demand for a single phone model is much much less than the iPhone)

I don't think there have been that many leaks for the iPad Mini, one photo of the inside of a rear shell and a flex cable. Don't think a screen's even been leaked to confirm the narrower bezel on the sides. Hundreds of renders though
