The drive is still recognised by the BIOS, but it has a load of bad sectors and failed S.M.A.R.T. tests etc.
It's very very slow to access anything so death is imminent I suspect.
I'm sure someone on here (Dom?) mentioned something about using a Linux live boot CD and copying stuff across to another drive that way, is that the best way to do it?
This is for a laptop BTW. I've already installed a new hard drive and Windows on it, but would quite like to be able to retrieve any documents and that off the old one if possible.

ubuntu live cd or something like that
usb thumb drive big enough for data
turn it on and fucking go for it bro.
There is talks about putting it in the freezer helping it  I think Dom has done that...

yeah you have to get it plugged back in as quick as possible, youve got maybe a 30 min window to get the data off as when it warms back up again it starts to fail

no, never happened with any of ours, think they are hermetically sealed, possibly vaccum sealed if thats the case no moisture will get inside anyway

If you're doing the freezer 'trick' then you need to stick it in a sealed bag; hard drives aren't completely sealed as they have valves for pressure equalising.
But yes, just use a live cd and backup what you can. Otherwise use something like GetDataBack where you can create an image and then recover data from that (if sticking the drive in the freezer, then i've found imaging the drive and recovering from that is the best method due to the limited operating window as Steve mentioned).

Yeah but you obviously have to be able to mount the image somehow to get the data off/do recovery. Only reason i mentioned GetDataBack was because it does a bit for bit image (ie: a 1TB drive equals a 1TB image) which helps for recovery.

Used Parted Magic on my Ultimate Boot CD in the end to copy stuff across (albeit slowly) from the knackered drive to the new one fitted in the laptop.

after I just posted up, was copying over a few more folders and a message box with a red 'no entry' style icon appeared saying "success" - LOLWTF
