Is it because it took you 4 years to learn it you have to try and make out like it's difficult?
IvI has also obviously managed to fix the problem, showing how simple it is.
If you could tell me how an RCD works without resorting to the Internet I'll give you £1000. More importantly how to test one to see if it's fucked? Didn't think so.

One thing I will not mess around with is Electrics in a house, After throwing myself across a kitchen touching a socket!

Piece of piss Bonney,
I could have done with John being at a house I went to a few weeks back actually. Reversed polarity from the incomer which nearly killed a 'DIYer' lucky for me I knew what to look for before I touched anything.
Well out of my depth I was

I couldn't tell you exactly what it does without googling it. I could however tell you one wasn't working, without any tests other than another one does work.
I would also find out how to test one if required, then I would know how to do it the next time
Reverse polarity wouldn't have nearly killed me, I'd be sure it's completely dead before touching anything, wouldn't have just relied on it being switched on the live side.

This was changing a light bulb on an old es lamp holder so you wouldn't have checked. Luckily the old guy in question didnt break his neck when he fell off his ladder after getting a belt.
Don't forget to buy your test equipment for when you find out how to test your RCD btw.

So what you mean is you have to buy a bit of kit. If that was considerably more expensive than the potentially faulty bit of course of just buy a replacement bit. I've never said I have all the gear, that doesn't change my basic understanding and being able to use a multimeter.

It's also unbelievably easy how an RCD works, as with most electrical stuff, if current being supplied doesn't equal current returned, there's a fault somewhere so it trips.

FFS, firstly, my name was brought up in here first, I hadn't said a word.
Secondly, if something doesn't work, you replace it, don't change anything else and it all then works, swap the faulty bit back in, it doesn't work, good bit back in, it works, it's the faulty bit that's faulty.
That applies for anything, whether it's amazingly complicated high school level electricity or not.

How do you know when an RCD doesn't work? When you get electrocuted in the shower and die as a result of it not disconnecting within its designated tripping time?

If I was electrocuted in the shower I'd obviously be dead, no need to specify the dead part when that's what the word means.
You and conspiracy nut can go on all you want about needing an electrician to change a light bulb. I wouldn't want a guy who's posted some of the stuff he has doing any of my electrical work, I'd be much more confident in my own ability.
Anything you know, at all, about electrics, I can find out if I have to. I don't need the information in my head because I'm not doing it day to day.
Because I don't know the regs, which I would if I had to, it's not difficult to read a book, does not say anything about my ability to troubleshoot a problem and work out if something is broken.

You haven't answered my question, just dodged it and come back with a load of nonsense about being an Internet wizard who can find the answer to any problem using google.

I did answer your question. I could prove it even more conclusively using a 3rd test part. I could also go and get whatever bit of kit you use to test it.

I had a problem with my rcd. Drove to screwfix and bought a new one, fitted it in 15 mins and no more problem.
For the cost replace the rcd, it might fix it but if not you can rule it out.

No mate, can't possibly have fixed it, need to fail at school, go and do 4 years as an apprentice, then have a 500 quid bit of gear to fix it.

John.
Discrediting anyone's job/trade/hard work since 30-06-2003.
Can't wait till your house is burning down and you end up letting it happen because your arguing with the fireman that you know what they know and your taking the hose of them.
You are a complete bellend, and seeing as you brought 'Conspiracy Nut' into it which is as dead as the hills from now on to me you are known simply as 'Know it all John' which I will bring up at every opportunity. Until like a certain other fanny on here you go crying to Ian about it.
Now go and have a Merry Fucking Xmas Mr Know it all.

I would never go to Ian about anything, I can give as good as I get.
You were completely sure about all the conspiracies until 5 minutes ago, I've been able to do most electrical work since I learnt the basic principles of it at school.
Bring up whatever you want, I'm not the one who thinks little green men are tampering with the wiring.

Not at all, just the kind of bollocks dickheads like you would assume.
Just because I'm not an Internet goon, doesn't mean I didn't do well in my education.
