I need to creat a partition on my external harddrive to connect to a linux tv box but dont want to lose wants on my Harddrive now is this possible?

It's possible but I wouldn't bother doing it, you'll almost undoubtedly end up losing something. Either back it up or get another drive for the tv box.

im just removing everything from my harddrive onto my pc. can i split the 1TB hard drive into 2 then then partition the 1 half. i want to use the harddrive for both things?

Use Computer Management to resize the partition (creating an unpartitioned space on the drive), create a new partition in the free space and then format it EXT3/EXT4/FAT/FAT32 (or what ever the STB supports).
Data should be safe but it's worth taking a backup of the drive prior to doing the above.

The hard drive dont have any unpartitioned space. So how can i make some spare space. The hdd is now completely empty.

As per what Dom said.
But to answer your question, a partition is a split.
so you can split (partition) your drive as many times as you like.
Think of your drive as a giant piece of cake, you can cut it up and split it into as mention sections as you like, each partition can be given its own file format as well.

Either remove all the partitions on the drive and then create two with the sizes you want or as i said, resize the current partition and create a new one in the created space.
You can do all of this from Computer Management (under Administrative Tools within Control Panel).
Edit - Make sure you select the external drive and NOT your internal system drives

I tried it in mmc but when i click my hdd it dont let me shrink it? The option is dull

think i know what you mean. delete the whole lot then crete the partitions i get ya. will try that now
