Father in laws ps3 has died this morning (great way to start father day eh). He will probably just buy another, however he will want his data back. Annoyingly the last time he did a backup was about a year ago so if we have to go back that far we will, however are there any options to get his data back ?
I've read you can't just chuck it in a dock nor pull the drive out and stick it in the new ps3.
Ill try and clean it up/fix it if possible to do a backup, however if there is an easy way id rather not mess about with it

Can you take the drive out, plug it into a PC and copy the data across?

It's hit and miss whether or not it'll fix it. I had a YLOD, had it reflowed, did the heat gun and oven bake and it was still fucked.
And your data is locked to that PS3 (potentially there might be a solution for breaking the encryption but i never looked into it), so unless you can get that PS3 up and running again to either do a backup or transfer the data off then it's gone unfortunately.

Curious how they'd fix these? Won't be able to download new update I guess. Wonder if they'll have to do a USB update of some kind?

You can get into safe mode but you can't downgrade the firmware. So Sony will either have to take the previous firmware and make it a revision higher IE 4.46 and then rollout a fixed 4.45 as 4.47..... or people will simply have to wait for Sony to investigate and release 4.46

So am I right that'd it'd have to be via USB or something?

Yup, you can do a system updated from an external drive (/flash drive etc) within Safe Mode and iirc, Sony has the firmware listed on their site you can download.

Guessing it's a fairly straight forward process. Read a few guides online and apart from overcooking it can't see much going wrong (famous last words eh).
