So when can I update from WP8 to WP8.1, without using the developer?
The developer version is exactly the same as what you'll get when it's 'officially' released, they just distribute it early to developers so they can test their apps for compatibility / update their apps to take advantage of the latest features.
There is no harm in getting it now; I've not found any incompatibilities so far.
It's a piece of piss to do, and no money needs to change hands. There's really no good reason not to get it -it's hundreds of little improvements that add up to a much better user experience in my opinion.
Otherwise, it's coming out "later in the year."

quote: The developer preview method will void your device warranty until your carrier has officially rolled out Windows Phone 8.1 and any associated carrier or device customizations
If you run into any early bugs with Windows Phone 8.1 on your device then you won’t be able to roll back to Windows Phone 8.
Worth considering if your just wanting to have a play.

Nah, it's bollocks mate. Stop being a bender and get downloading!
There are loads of people on WPCentral who have had no issues with warranty whatsoever in the event of needing to make a warranty claim after having installed this or any other developer preview in the past. It's just arse-covering.
In any case, you can roll back if you know what you're doing. There's always a way with these things:

Is your phone even in warranty still!?
