I find that naming equipment after 'things' is an old school bad practice.
Our local water company did it, some of there systems were named after the Simpsons.
I've always been told your server names should dictate what the server is/does.
Ctx-xx-ups01 = citrix - [part of the business, e.g sch for school] - universal printer server 1

My servers are named after their task.
Gaz I just find it a bit of fun, plus I've seen that in the couple of replaces I've done it people become a little more attached to their machine and don't spill red wine over it!

Our servers are named based on os, type and number
Eg
Svr2012-vdc-01
Would be a server running 2012, operating as a virtual domain controller in hyper v
Svr12r2-fs-01
Would be a server running 2012 r2, operating purely as a file server.
And so on

I like to call our laptops all the same name.
It's then a race against colleagues to get to the office first in order for TCP/IP function.

Names being the same wouldnt stop the TCP/IP suite from working as long as they has discrete IP's.
It would stop internal DNS from working but you'd get by.
