Am finally giving up with the virgin superhub as it's getting annoying trying to stream to my apple tv/now tv boxes
Google recommends the solution to all my issues is putting the hub in to modem mode and buying a router to run off it

Anybody have an suggestions? Not really any idea on budget as not sure what I need

What will the router be uses for?

Will it need a site-to-site VPN, will you connect up a USB printer, how many Ethernet ports do you need etc?

Mate of mine bought a TP-Link branded router from ebuyer for about £35 the other day. I set it up for him yesterday and it seems good.

Make sure ypu buy something that supports dual-band especially if you dont plan to replace for a few years.

May aswell pay a bit more and get something thats actually going to keep up with the newer technology thats coming/come out.

Anything buy Netgear or Asus is good.

Dlink DIR-880L, Netgear R7000 or one of the Asus's RT-AC68U, RT-AC66U or N66U; if you get an Asus then see if the Merlin firmware is available for it as it adds a few little fixes and features to the device.

It all depends on your budget though and if there's any 'fancy' (VPN, torrent/usenet downloader, ftp/web/media server, USB port for printer sharing or NAS/hard-drives etc etc) features you want.

In terms of connections I have smart tv, Apple TV, sky box and NAS wired then run now tv, printer, ipad and laptop over wifi
Do use torrents

Biggest reason for wanting to get a router is for using nfl gamepass as quite often experience buffering/quality issues

Be surprised if it's down to WiFi; likely to do with congestion elsewhere. I'm guessing you've tried using an ethernet connection to your "nfl gamepass" device to rule out an issue with WiFi?

Yeah I believe it's down to virgins traffic management policies which putting the hub into modem mode with a router is meant to improve
Issues are the same via wifi to ipad or Ethernet to Apple TV so don't believe it's an issue with the wifi

If it is traffic management kicking in then it won't matter whether you use the SuperHub for routing or an external router, you'll still end up with the same issue as it's your connection being physically throttled at the headend.
And if it is traffic management then ease back on your downloading prior to watching a game so you don't go over the threshold to kick it in.

Tbh, if it's primarily happening during peak times then it more than likely to be congestion at your local UBR (essentially the equivalent of a telephone exchange), in which case you'll need to continuously complaining to Virgin until they sort it out - you're better off monitoring your connection over a few weeks and supplying VM with the details; loads of info on this on the VM forums.

Interested to hear where you read/heard modem-only mode improving traffic management though

May have worded that wrong, not so much that it improved traffic management but that it improved overall speeds

Still sounds like complete BS to me but you can easily test that by sticking the SuperHub in modem-only mode, connect it via ethernet to your "nfl gamepass" device (assuming it's the ATV?), reboot the lot (modem then your device) and see if that makes any difference - doing this will bypass the router/routing part of the SuperHub and your "nfl gamepass" device will essentially connect 'directly to the internet' (ie - it'll be assigned your internet/WAN ip address).

If you still have the same issues then it isn't the SuperHub at fault.
