Go to a Bosch or Lucas or Delphi specialist, he will check the ignition module
My 1.4 16v was also playing, and I tried 3 different spark plugs from Bosch (all recommended for the car), ECU was Okay, no fault codes...
Then my old mechanic fitted some NGK spark plugs BCP6ES, and since then the car is running perfectly
fuckin unbielivable
But for that problem I will begin by the ignition module...its so good doing troubleshouting

mate have u taken it to a proper vaux garage? when mine was revving up on it own and not idoling propley i left it with them, 3 days later after they couldent find out what was wrong, they found out that the short wiring harnes was faulty, it was giving the ecu wrong information, it cost like £20 for a new 1

tec1 and tec 2 devices cant check for things like this, u need to know the engine inside out and what the information flows are in the engine, then u can conduct a logical fault finding process
