Two quotes so far: (1.4 16v engine BTW)

Garage 1: £450
Garage 2:£400



And as its sunday most places arent open, so now i have to make more phonecalls tomorrow morning.

Also i'm not getting a valver conversion as this car is getting sold when i turn 21 in september. Had enough of fixing it and paying out for work on it.

It's 16v and its not an easy task. I'm all for saving money but this is one for the pro's.

Fair enough. The skimming isn't diy either so keep hunting for a lower price.

I'll be hunting more tomorrow. I'm detrmined to pay less than £400. £350 is the aim as i've been reading up on here how much people have been paying.

Still an un-needed expense to me though Oh well shit happens.

is their a diff between "rocker cover gasket" and "head gasket?

coz i had my rocker cover gasket done for less than £100 on my 1.6 16v gsi!

rocker cover gasket is higher up the engine than head gasket, the head gasket is costly as you need to re time the engien after, and take the big top bit off! the rocker cover gasket is easier to do! just take the small metal cover off

id just buy a 2nd hand engine from scrappy

head gasket is really not that hard a job honest you should be lookin at about £15 for the gasket but wen you take the head of you might as well change the cambelt and tensioners so if you did it yourself and got some one to skim the head it'd cost you bout£150 its honestly not that hard if you get stuck just use the haynes

Good idea, but there's no guarantee that a scrappy engine wouldn't go wrong aswell

16v engines are prone to head gasket failure, mine went last year

Best is to get it fixed if the rest of the engine is ok, if not then just stick a 2.0 16v in there

rocker cover gasket is the gasket between the head and the rocker cover.
head gasket is inbetween the head and the block.

rocker cover gasket is a piece of piss job to do and takes no time, anyone can do it as it is not demanding atall.

I would do that but i know the history of my engine and i know its been looked after, buying an engine from a scrappy could be dodgy. The head could go on that too for all i know. I'm gonna fix this one then the car is being sold in august/september.

Making way for a Italian or French car

i spent 180 quid o havin head gasket and valve stem seals replaced

didnt have it skimmed though as head gasket hadnt gone, valve stem seals and replaced head gasket at same time

that also included new cam belt

need to find urself a friendly garage

bit of a task though if have no previous experience and are bit worried!

dont u have to torque the head bolts up bit by bit incase they snap and fuck ur engine up?

When mine went I bought a new gasket for £18 and head bolts for £12. Changed for £30.....

The head bolts need to be tightened up in a specific sequence to get a proper gasket seal as they are stretch bolts. Its not hard to do if you have a torque wrench (about £15)

Its 4 hours book time to do it, so if you can find a independant garage and pay about £25/hr it shouldn't be more than about £120 for the labour. Offer to buy the parts yourself and get them from autovaux to save a bit of cash.

A head skim only costs about £25.

Find out what parts are included in the prices before you go ahead.

Thanks for the advice miles. I'll do just that.

Also i have limited mechanical knowledge and whoever said 'tis a piece of pish' is talking from their experience and knowledge. Not everyone is as mechanically minded as you...............

I'll phone up for some more quotes and ask detailed questions.

Also what are the chances the head would need skimming? I drove it no more than 20miles after i thought it was the head gasket that had gone. I havent started it up since i realised and since the symptoms had been noticed.

id say as long as the temp gauge stayed low throughout the time it was going/gone you should be ok

if it was high then may have warped under heat, happened to my metro k series gti engine, but that is an alloy engine so not sure if different thing

i only drove it for bout 15 miles but was very hot!

Well if i assume its gone and fear the worst it can only be good news from there on in. At least that way i wont inccur any extra costs unlike if i was to think it wasnt warped etc....
