Ok, ive got around £700-£800 to spend on a new laptop for University work and other things.

Dont really know much about these, can anyone send me in the right direction? Any help MUCHO appreciated

Dell are usually over priced get a Ergo or Acer summit like that.

toshiba, acer, packard bell...

there best ones for price IUMO

Sony & dell are seriously overpriced for what they are (especially Sony)

Advent...

used to have the hghest returns compared to other models

Keep an eye out in Aldi tho for Medion Laptops, or look on eBay... there pretty damn suprising for the cost! Worked with a few of these & not once have they failed me!

The Centrino wireless card is utter cack mate

I know a few people who had spent extra to upgrade the wireless card inside to get better reception etc - which will be useful if your campus has wireless network etc

However, the centrino processors are actually quite good and offer good power saving features as well as speed features

One thing you have got to note mate, is if your worried about battery life, then make sure the laptops processor is a mobile (usually have an m or mobile somewhere) jobby and not a bog standard desktop version, as the mobile version save alot of power - so bigger battery times etc

Also, stay away from Tiny/Time etc, pure cack in a case

Anyways, what type of work do you need it for mate? What features do you want out of the thing - graphics, storage etc?
List a few things that are important that it MUST beable to do well and im sure a few people will recommend something

hp compaq's are the best imo for actuall computing but sony ones are the most stylish. whatever you do dont buy a toshiba one as i bought 4 a few weeks ago and they were really tacky. acers are quite good for the price i have bought 2 and they are both working really well. dell are also good but a bit overpriced and lack style. for £850 get a HP nx7000 imo there the best ive seen!

Im doing Network Computing. Living at home so i guess the mobile thing aint a must i just fancied a bit of wireless around the home (i get carried away when i start looking for this sorta thing)

Must be Quick, Reliable and have good battery life. Id like it too be pretty slim as well as i dont much fancy carrying round a monster everywhere.

Just something as close to a desktop PC as poss really for the best value and keeping under the £800 mark. I will go a little over if i have to

Toshiba are great. Find out if theres any computer trade fairs near you, I got mine from one, cost me 500 quid for a really good little Toshiba Portege.

Well HP do some pretty thing lappys and so does packard bell

so have a butchers at them mate

But i would make sure there is a decent amount of ram in the thing and as big as a hard disk you can get, because there not cheap (nearly double the price of a desktop version) if you ever want to upgrade

Also, get a mobile jobby processor, as this will save you loads of power as well as heat (which desktop versions suffer from).

As for wireless mate, you can buy a PCMCIA card for around the 30 quid mark, which will be alot better than the standard ones that built into Centrino lappys

And like said before, ebay will be your best friend here mate

Have a search on dixions, curry's, pc world etc etc and see if you can hunt it down on ebay for cheaper

Can get a much better spec PC for your money than you'd pay for a laptop too. Just worth thinkin about...

he is living at home, so its not a problem

But, im sure he wants to beable to take his work around with him and continue his work around the uni's campus etc
