k guys (and girls), i need a little bit o need help. My cambelt was changed yesterday, done by a new mechanic and myself. Its all been put back together properly, timing is good and the belt is tensioned right etc. Problem is, when i accelerate and put the engine under load (eg. accelerating at 30mph in 4th) or just bootin it a lil bit, this rattling like a paint can being shaken (with the ball) happens. I dont know what it is, and the mechanic is new, so dont really know either.
other than that, all i can say is the person who had it b4 me, obviously had the head of at some point, dunno y or when.
any help on what it is, (if its gonna wreck the engine) and how to fix it would be great!...someone suggested that the other owners may have had the head skimmed, and so the timing might have to be slightly off from the timing marks? or the valves???
but i dunno.
all help apperciated.
cheers

does it only happen under load, or can u make it happen when revving in neutral?
what engine btw?
i had something like this happen after i changed a belt once, got a tinny rattle at about 3.5k revs. even though i had timed everything up properly, and checked tension, turned out the belt was slightly too tight. very easy to do on the 14/16xe engines.
i would strip it back down, and time it up again just to be sure.

it only happens under load, revving when neutral is fine. Its a 1.4 8v. ive stripped it down 3 times now checking the timing

the timing is perfect mate, would skimming it mean that the timing would have to be set differently, by a cog or two?? i was just talkin to someone bout it, but he doesnt know if the timing would be any different?

oh lovely
did you use a new tensioner? did you install a new water pump? how many miles on the engine?

yup, new tensioner, new water pump - (my old one was sposidly FCUKED...badly!!), its done 90k now. if it is the valves, will it screw the engine up 4 when ive fixed it, and is it ok to drive it still the head has been off so im still wondering about skimming?
i shoulda just checked the timing was b4 i took it all off, we just didnt see the need to check it and didnt think of it

your deffo positive that you have timed it up right? I.E using the arrow on the small bottom timing belt pulley? lining it up with a small notch in the rear timing belt cover.... NOT the big aux belt pulley.
the camshaft pulley has a small groove on it ... this should be pointing upwards... in line with the groove cut out of the rear of the timing belt cover...

righty then... if the timing is good and it was alright before hand then it has to be a loose bolt of somthing simple........
retrace your steps back it has to be something simple 8v's are pretty easy to change a belt on...

i reckon u guys are right and it is the timing. i just saw a picture, with no great discription, of where the timing mark is for the bottom pulley, the mechanic showed me a mark-and timing is perfect to that mark, but the picture showed a different mark-about 2 teeth away from where it is now!!!
would that cause the rattling? or just fcuk the engine?...bein 2 teeth out??
can someone post a pictur of EXACTLY where the bottom pulley timing mark is for a 1.4 8v, n reg PLZ?? (preferably with a photoshoped arrow sayin HERE! :lol
THANKS!

take off the bottom pulley and look at the pulley behind it... theres an arrow on it.... it should line up with a notch out on the rear timing belt cover.... i can find a pic unfortunatly this is all in your haynes manual...

kewl, last question then, the arrow on the bottom pulley, when timed up correctly, is it sposed to be directly down towards the ground for the 1.4 8v (1995)? cos it was in the picture i saw. if so, the mech has showed me and used the wrong mark! hence being timed up perfectly (earlier statements) but wrong.

take off the bottom pulley as i said above... then take off the front part of the timing belt cover....
there is a little mark like this cut out of it(that picture is off a 2.0 engine but the mark on the timing belt cover is in the same place...however the mark on your TIMING BELT pulley is an arrow > unlike the piture bellow....

easy way to check put car in 1st gear, take out spark plug number one, drop a long screw driver down into the cylinder, rock the car when the piston pushes the screw driver up make note of the highest point of its travel, this is TDC then check it againts ya timing marks they should line up at TDC

^ would the easyest way not be just to set the timing marks correct? not exactly rocket science
P.S will have new wheels on tigra project laterz

Hmm, rattling under load, the head has been over skimmed probably, too high compression causing pinking
