Get a 1.0 12v if you want cheap insurance and low running costs...
Stay clear of 1.2 8v engines because they are slow and really thirsty.
Guessing your a girl so you coul dporbably get away wih a 1.4. The Sport editions are nicely equipped, usually ith full electrics e.t.c...

For a first car i would get a 1ltr, it will be cheaper to insure and with it being your first insurance it will be still quite dearer then usual so wouldnt get a big engined car

depending on age, around R-reg the 8v 1.2 got rubbish but k/l reg ones are ok and pretty indestructable, i had one and it got some justice and it was heavy on fuel, just check sills, and door pillars, not much went wrong with my one, i got bored with it and it failed the mot cos the sills were rotten so i broke it and scrapped it

Go for a 1.4 16v sport (grp 6) or a 1.2 SXi (Grp 3)
Just shop around for insurance on them my ex was insured on a 1.4 sport fully comp for 980 FC and she was 18 with 0 NCB so it can be done.
If you buy a 1 litre you will be very disaspointed

1.0 is just as slow as the 1.2 8v, and i managed 300+miles from a tank in mine

1.2 16V SXi is a nice car, its the same as I've got so I'm biased. Its cheap to run and insure and the engine is not exactly bomb proof but it wont let you down. If it does then its not going to cost that much to fix.
