Trying to render my CAD model in 3D Studio Max, and I'm constantly getting trouble with crashing, when this little bastard pops up and the program terminates:
Any ideas what the problem could be, I'm guessing it's maxing out the RAM, but no idea how to fix it...

doubt its ram, as ive done stupidly huge polly'd renders and never struggled with my gig of ram. Only time ive had that is when i installed renderman, and it buggered it a bit - but a reinstall solved it.

nah, not the ram as Dom stated, do you have enough temporary space for it to work in?

It just means the program was trying to read a variable that hasn't been created yet.
Bad news is it could be absolutely anything.
Ram, drivers, dll's, cpu, etc etc.

my first guess would be your swap file size. set it to at least 50% of your total RAM

Set the Page File to the maximum possible and still having trouble... is that the same as swap file?

Page file is same as swap file
well having the page file set to maximum is not going to help you at all. if you have 2GB of RAM, look at making your page file 3.5 - 4GB minimum, and have the maximum set to 5GB. setting the page file to maximum is going to cause instability in hi end CAD programs like yours, since the HDD will end up being entirely Page File, and this can cause Windows to behave strangely

Put the program in the allowed list for Data Execution Prevention as well.

if it overheats slightly it can cause errors like that, invest in some better cooling especially as it will be getting a hammering

Looked into it today Steve, but it's running at around 32.1 C, not exactly boiling point
Maybe if I up the Vcore a touch? That might help?

canne see that being the problem - i use the thing max on a 2gig amd that heats to around 55c during renders
could try updating drivers (mobo/graphics), wouldnt hurt - but i doubt its that. Just sounds like a dodgy bug - unless it worked before and doesnt now in which case it could be a conflict somewhere

If you think your computer isn't stable run prime95.
That will show up any cpu or memory problems very quickly.
Although not graphics ones.

I'll try and install the software again, then a format before spending any money on more hardware

Doing my head in, if i turn off some of the layers, so I'm just rendering the outer shell of the car, it's fine... if I try to render the whole car it dies.
And I've only had problems with Max, not my other programs.

I've tried two different versions, one earlier and one later and it's been the same.

maybe it uses an instruction set that AMD doesnt support, have u got a pentium based pc to try on?
this is why i was always wary using amd chips
