Good question, I wanted to ask something like this too....
Ive done loads of web design in the past (using Fireworks and Dreamweaver) all self taught, but are there any courses worth doing to get things nailed properly and some qualification to show for it? Not looking for any full time course really either.
BTW- Hope you dont mind me tagging this question on in here Shelly?

Though qualifications aren't that important (They only ever get you your first job, just like degrees) employers don't really give a shit about qualifications to be honest.
If you're looking to get into the industry, a company who's looking to employ you would rather see a portfolio full of websites which you've done to see what you're made of and whether they think you're good enough.
Do a qualification, but if you're really wanting a job from it, make sure you get plenty freelance work at the same time to backup the qualification.

Find out exactly what the qualification is and what they intend to cover. Also bear in mind it will cost you money unless you can convince the employer to sponsor it.

Yes it depends what the qualification will cover.
Ideally you will need to learn a scripting language such as PHP or ASP but I'd imagine these courses will only cover HTML using a package like Dreamweaver or frontpage.
Aside from that, once you've learnt a bit, the best way to get better and sell yourself to companies is to approach small companies to build up your portfolio.
To start with, you might have to offer to build sites for free but once you've got a couple done, you can start charging .
P.s. Always agree a price before you do the work, I learnt the hard way

I will be very surprised if you'll find PHP or ASP in a qualification in the National Qualifications Framework.
There's one which has it as an optional unit which my employer runs, but thats because I put it in there
Its also a level 3 qual. The level 2 stuff is HTML, bit of application package stuff and some general IT/literacy/numeracy as is the fashion these days.
Private training / full cost recovery may be a different picture, I'm talking about further education.

There's no qualification called OCR Web Design - it might be OCR Level 2 Diploma for iMedia Users
http://www.openquals.org.uk/openquals/qualificationDetails.aspx?QualificationId=12257
Java Appletts bit would worry me, not least that its spelt 'Applets' but thats very old technology indeed, completely pointless learning anything to do with that if you're on a Level 2 web design qualification.
Can I interest you in a BTEC

Required: one microscope to read the tiny text!
It's not a very 1600x1200-friendly page!

What if Corsa_Chelle is posting in a Penis subject thread without posting experience of personal experiences with Penis' or having one herself. Can we phone and leave a detailed message for you to look into this in more detail asap?!

There's no voicemail on it, but I'm sure one of my colleagues would pass the message on

I was thinking of this also as I've got a fair bit of web design experience and know my way round ASP and PHP well. Does anyone know of a 'home' course - one of these that you just do from home and then send away answers???

You could do mine from home technically, but you would still need to pay the course fee, may as well attend the classes if you're doing that.

We could run that in the evening subject to demand. The problem with Level 2 stuff is that you generally get a load of other IT stuff not just web design at that level.
