If i was just looking to purchase the following would i be able to achieve it on a £300 budget?
Motherboard (support up to 2GB RAM)
Processor (Core 3.0Ghz+)
Graphics Card (256Mb/512Mb)
DVD RW
1GB of RAM (will upgrade down the line)
I have harddrive, monitor, wireless network card, is there anything else i need?
If anyone can reccomened a processor/motherboard combo that'll be good to

you won't get top of the range stuff on that budget, as long as you're aware of that.
I'd recommend ASUS and ABIT for motherboards, always had them and they've been great.

The latest ones aren't no.
The earlier AMDs (Opterons, Bartons) are much better than their Intel counterparts though and well worth a purchase if you can source one cheap.

isn't that slower in terms of speed than the Intel above? 2.2 to 3.4?

dont get bogged down in all the speed terms the AMD make up for slower speeds by using better technology that increases throughput.
if you can fnd one get an AMD 4400+ as it has 1mb of cache

If you get an AMD make sure it's socket AM2 as the 939 is discontinued
If intel get a 754 socket
try www.scan.co.uk or www.dabs.com

CRAP.
AMDs were much better than any of the old P4's. The newer Coreduo are a differnt kettle of fish. but for £300 also out of the question
