Hi,
As you know, I'm getting ready to put an XE in the Corsa. Now, I have to buy the insurance this week from Brentacre as my old policy runs out. So obviously I don't want to be running the 1.2 if i'm paying 2.0 insurance .
I have a whole calibra with my donor engine in. Has been there all summer, and looks to be in pretty good shape. Started it up a couple of times, and she always fires up first time. Not actually ran it for long though, because it has no exhaust!
The engine is a "Late type" XE with 124k. I have the service documentation for the car, and it has 14 dealer service stamps from a local Picador Vauxhall. I always worry about servicing on engines, as I only run one car - And can't afford anything serious to break! I'll be whipping the engine out and sending it off to have a few bits fitted for piece of mind. Starting with a full Cambelt/Tensioner kit and new waterpump. I also will be putting a new thermostat in there as a precaution. Should I use "aftermarket" servicing parts - Or just buy GM kits from Autovaux etc?
What other parts could be replaced on the engine? Bearing in mind i don't want to take the head off!
My next worry is that I work in the middle of Southampton - So use the car daily to commute. Sometimes sitting in traffic, I'm there for a while, So I want thecar to be running nice and cool. Particulary in Summer! What parts should be recommended for that? New Radiator? Cool Running Stat? Fan switch?
Service Parts: Oil/Plugs/Leads/Coolant
Brakes: I already have 2.0 Calibra Discs/Pads on the car and Goodridge Hoses.
Tyres: Yep!
Radiator: I need a new rad anyway - The one in my 1.2 has just sort of been hanging there for ages, so is a bit battered. What rad do I need? 1.6? Diesel?
Fitting Kit: Picked one that I want.
Wiring: That's sorted too, Not sure how i'm going to get round my alarm though!
Think that's it for the moment, If i've missed anything, Let me know and I'll add it to my list!
Ta! Phil
Edit: 18/1
Thought of a few new bits.
1.4 16v Header Tank
1.4 16v Fuel Pump from under rear bench.
I have 1.4 16v Fuel Lines at my disposal. For simplicity should I just get the whole MPi fuel lines for the car?
Do you have to do any extra wiring for that bit?

The rad from a sport will be sufficient. Use GM service parts.
If you replace the thermostat and fanswitch, it shouldn't overheat, but you can always wire up a manual override on the fan, just to flick on in traffic.
How much is your insurance and with what NCB?

Only other thing I can think of is the rocker gaskets which can go brittle and leak oil. Might be worth getting this.
And also swapping the sump gasket to an 8v rubber one.
Also some gearbox oil and some new driveshaft seals would be useful too.

Timing belt Kit - £59.95
Water Pump - £21.95

depending on which radiator you use, you'll need a suitable top hose.
a non aircon radiator uses the top hose from a 1.0 12v corsa
an aircon model radiator uses the mk3 astra gsi top hose.
i have a 1.6 aircon model radiator for sale if you need one?

Are cool running thermostats really needed for normal driving, cant a car thats running too cold do as much damage as one that is run hot?
Wouldn't just a manual override switch be better for the fan.
I thought the cooler running stats were better for mainly track day usage?

buy a new 1.4 8v rad, and get two slimline fans for it, this will keep it ultra cool. I had alot of problems until I invented this setup.

i have a corsa XE with 1.6 gsi rad and fan and it never gets hot with normal driving. The fan comes in at 94/95
My m8s XE corsa had the normal 1.4 8v fan and rad and used to climb to 99/100 before the fan came in, the temp used to rise aloty quicker than it did in mine but the car never overheated.
what im trying to say is that the standard 1.4 8v fan and radiator will cope but for best results use a gsi or diesel Radiator m8.
