the other is a c20let again, on an L reg, that has been sitting for 1 year due to MOT failure, but he said it has bloody centimental value what-eva
so will an engine that has sat for 3 years of seized ?

It would if you take it apart and clean it up, put new gaskets on it and possibly new rings and a re-hone.
It MIGHT work straight away, but it'd be a risk, as it might be full of spiders or dust.

is it worth the risk of buying it "cheap" to re-build ? it only has about 50k on the clocks

Depends how cheap really.
If you can get a spark plug out, have a look inside the bore (or get the head off, that'd be better) and you'll get an idea of what it's like.
It'd be rebuildable pretty much whatever condition it's in, as long as the block/head isn't cracked.

Ahhh I see, so you're just buying it for the future. Nice
If you're willing to pay for the conversion, and my insurance after, you can happily use my car

Fuck that crap. Whack a battery in it and turn it over with the fuse out for the fuel pump for a couple of mins. Put the fuse back in an see if it fires up.
I did that with my XE, she'd been stood for over a year.

Is it still in a car?
If so, do what Phil says, just check the oil is ok and spin it over.

just start it up,
or best thing, do and oil + filter change first then just start it, theres no reason why the engine will get dirty, as its a sealed unit technically

If the engines have had oil in them for the time they haven't been used they should be ok.
No harm in taking the sump off first for a visual check though.
