Im also looking to buy a new tv in this price range, currys have a 50" Samsung plasma on offer at the moment, but it is only 720p, same price I can get a 1080p Sony 40" LCD from richer sounds. What would be my better option?

Well the Sony as its higher res, also richer sounds have excellent customer service as I've recently found out as my LCD developed a fault they got an engineer out immediately and have 2 weeks to fix it.

The Sony would probably look better for HD stuff, whereas the plasma you'd have to sit further back but could offer a better SD picture.
Best thing to is read some reviews, compare specs etc

It would be in my bedroom so Im thinking the 50" would be stupidly big, and viewing distance aprox about 4m?

Naa i've got 37" at 3, had 32" before that, was too small.
50 will be far too big though.

i have a 42" LG scarlett in my room, and a 50" panasonic plasma downstairs.
Ignore the LCD criticism, the picture is actualy sharper on my Lcd than the plasma. You may need to fiddle around with the settings to get the best out the picture but thats it. Quality is amazing. I paid £800 for my Lg scarlett, the panasonic plasma at the same price had a washed out dull picture.
Plasma is "better " if you can afford t, but in my personal experience theres not alot in it. Be more careful of the colour ratio and things like that. Some Samsung plasmas going cheap had crap spec if you look below the surface of the features.

The 700 quid plasma will never be better than the lcd unless you watch nothing apart from freeview.
1st time you go to watch a dvd/blu-ray/ play an hd console the picture will be far superior.

i would worry less about the fact its an lcd or a plasma and more about the individual spec of the model your looking at.

looks like an LCD then, i thought this would be the better option, as im under the impression that for a good plasma picture you would have to spend around the £900 mark

Only way i'd have a plasma was if it was given to me free and I wasn't allowed to sell it to buy an lcd.
