It’s about time I updated this thread as the jailbreaking scene has come along way.
Jailbreaking – What is it? What does it do?
When you first receive your iPhone it comes equipped with Apples own ‘App Store’, which means you can only download and install programs that Apple sees fit.
When you jailbreak your phone you will instantly see a new app stores called ‘Cydia’.
This new app stores contain hundreds of apps that Apple do not consider appropriate for your phone, apps that allow you to easily customise themes and ringtones amongst other things.
Will it void my warranty?
No.
If there is something wrong with your iPhone and you wish to send it back, simply plug it in, fire up itunes and click the restore button. It will instantly restore back to the latest stock firmware.
Is it possible to brick my iPhone by jailbreaking?
No
Does it cost anything to jailbreak
NO!
The original jailbreakers are known as the Dev Team, which can be found at http://blog.iphone-dev.org . However, for now some of the team members have gone there own way and released their own jailbreaks, some slightly easier to understand and use then others.
The Current Jailbreak (Pre IOS4), can be found at http://spiritjb.com
Am I likely to loose any data while jailbreaking?
No.
I have jailbroken my phone several times, restored to stock firmware and back again and still not once managed to loose data, however Its important that you backup your data via Itunes before making any modifications to the firmware!
Im ready, where do I start?
Head over to http://spiritjb.com/ and download the program for either Windows, Mac or Linux depending on your PC.
Plug your Ipod/Iphone/Ipad in and launch the program, there is only 1 button to press;
It will then jailbreak your device and automatically reboot it.
I’ve done it! I wanna download some new apps
After installing Cydia, give it a launch!
You will need to download and install ‘Sources’ or ‘Respositories’ which links the Cydia store to all the great apps.
When Cydia loads, select ‘Sections’ at the bottom of the screen, scroll down to ‘Respositories’ and install the whole lot (this make take you 10 mins or so).
Once done, close down Cydia and reboot the software and wait a few moments for everything to update.
From then on your free to browse the great apps.
What Apps do you recommend?
Catagories – Allows you to create desktop folders. I have two folders called ‘Appz’ and ‘Games’. I have about 20 apps in each which makes my normal desktop alot cleaner.
CatagoriesSB – loads the desktop folders faster.
ToneFXs – Easily customise ANY sound on your iphone to any sound you choose to dump on there.
Flash light – pretty self explanatory.
Winterboard Customise the theme of your iphone! Once you download and install Winterboard, browse Cydia: Sections -> Themes (complete) and theres tons to pick from. My favs are ModMyMac, LeopardU and Vivid.
McallShow – Tells you the location of the caller when ringing. Once you download and install, you will also need to download the UK database.
Modem – Allows you to connect your Iphone to your laptop and use the free internet on it. More info on their website.
Voicemail Forwarder – A great app for forwarding voicemail recordings to your email address
Cytact - Allows you to add photos to your contacts which is displayed when ringing/incoming call.
If anyone has any questions, ask away!

Its not yet been released.
Keep an eye on the Dev Team Blog as per the initial post.
The above method still stands for 3.0 firmware.
If your really interested, a member of the Iphone Dev Team is posting occasional updates on this page but its nothing official. Im sure it will be out shortly as they've had no problems jailbreaking the betas.
Im not sure whether to upgrade to 3.0 non JB first or not

Can you upgrade to 3.0 and unlock? I'm not bothered about Jailbreaking as I never use Cydia or Installer apps anyway!

Im not so sure with that. I think you need to upgrade with 'Ultrasn0w' which should be released shortly. I would wait for that to find out more.
*edit* This Page gives you a good idea of how to unlock and whats involved.

i used purplerain on my 3gs it worked fine, i have read that if you upgrade your firmware to 3.1 you may never be able to jailbreak it. 3.0.1 can be jailbroke with purplerain also

Pretty much any site that answer my question is blocked here in work.
Can you jailbreak and unlock the new 3GS yet to allow it to work on any network and install the "free" apps like on the 2G phones?
Thanks
