Why not just use the jack intelligently? Slowly lower/raise it. Or just go by some ten quid clamps, you cheap skate.

You can get some from Screwfix Direct for about £13, it's not exactly going to put you behind on your bills.
They are far better quality than those eBay ones as well, those ones look like they'll break as soon as you take them out of the box.

What he said, put the car up on axle stands with both sides raised as much as the jack will go and just take the pressure off the shocker bottom bolts by jacking the rear beam up a bit. Undo the bolts, take them out then lower the jack which will in turn lower the axle. Reverse this to re fit them - that's what I did last week anyway but to be fair they are lowering springs, not sure if you'd have enough of a space with standards.

it only costs £50 to get a garage change the shocks and springs for you and you do not even need to get under the car. let someone else take the risk.

of the car if i'm going down a particularly rough road ..... oh well one more
problem to add to the list

I always remove them without clamps but I'm an animal lol!
I put the impact wrench on the strut top then put the whole lot on its side the with back of the impact wrench up against the wall, then unwind and wait for it to fire accross the workshop
