this is what I dont like about the Android software, your at the mercy of the carrier as to whether or not you recieve the update.
It wont be long before your phone becomes out of date and the carriers wont want to test the android updates and therefore prevent you from updating
Apple do have that bit right.

Depends... You can unbrand the Desire for free (and pretty much all Android phones too), so getting generic updates is much easier.
However, HTC are also pretty shit at rolling out updates. The Hero took pretty much forever to get the 2.1 update "officially"
However, as Android is opensource and free, there is plenty of development out there so you can easily update to an "unofficial" vanilla ROM.

What do normal iOS updates bring that you would be in a rush to upgrade to anyway?
Everybody wants froyo in a rush because of big things like flash, not because they've patched the latest jailbreak method.

How can this be done?
I only ask as my friend has a desire which is riddled with Orange crap...

Normal updates, not big ones like from 3-4.
On an orange one it's a bit more complicated, you can possibly end up needing an unlock code (tenner)
Loads of info on xda-developers and modaco, I think you'd be able to follow it ok Bart, it's mainly just running programs.

These are the real joys of having an open os, the networks can fuck them up at will and install a load of bloat onto them

This isn't a standing argument as networks have been branding and bloating closed phone OS's even before the iPhone and Android existed.

An argument against what? I remember the gayness of Vodafone Live branding all over my old Symbian phones too.

Exactly there wasn't one. Saying "These are the real joys of having an open os, the networks can fuck them up at will and install a load of bloat onto them" is a completely invalid statement as it happens on both closed and open OS's.
Either way, branding the software is absolute bollocks and i don't see why networks do it as 99% of the time it just slows down the device and adds completely unwanted apps/services. Networks should just stick to branding casing.
Luckily though you can flash devices majority of phones to unbranded firmware usually by changing the product key and then using the manufacturers update tool to download new firmware.
