What do you do if your Mac develops a fault and say it's out of the warranty period?

I had someone phone up this morning with a 2 year old iMac, that just did 3 beeps when he turned it on. I told him we don't work on Macs but that it sounded to me like it was probably a memory problem as Macs and PCs are quite similar in how they operate (having just checked on Google I was actually right about the beeps meaning a RAM failure

).

So anyways, what do you guys do - do you try and fix it yourself, do you pay Apple to fix it or what?

I'm just wondering if I'm missing out on a good source of income here

My Mac experience has only ever been with an old PowerMac G4 TBH, but I'm guessing all-in-one systems like the iMac are a pain to work on?

If it's got a broken component, replace it. Memory and HDD's are simple to do as they resemble a laptop in their design and construction. Other things depend on the model.

I know I could have probably gone out and checked his iMac but I didn't want to go out there not knowing how the fuck to open it up for example

Just watch the Youtube video on how to do it.

I recently replaced the hard drive on my brother's macbook pro, loads of little screws everywhere

I've also replaced the hard drive on my old iMac G5.

My bro's laptop really needs a new screen and aluminium case....but the parts are soooo costly

Ideally you'd want to be a AASP, that way you can cover in-warranty systems as well. I also have a feeling (not 100%) you have to be a AASP to be able to offer a Apple warranty on any repair work you do (usually you get a 6/12months warraty on replaced items if the product is outside of warranty).
Either way, it could be a fairly decent earner (got stung last time i got an iMac repaired; £410 for a logic board and HDD to be replaced/fitted) although replace parts tend to be expensive.

Edit - As John said, a lot of the newer Macs aren't particularly easy to take apart and replace components.

The company we used to work with in an old job just had an office in an industrial estate, was hardly a walk in shop. Not sure if that helps.

Left me a voicemail last night saying that a pop up appeared and what should he do..... but I didn't get back to him in time. Now it's infected.

Getting rid of it now. Hate PCs sometimes.

Luckily, I have a spare iMac

My other half will probably want (need) an iMac soon as she does illustration/graphic design work.

Not sure whether to get a secondhand one for her and upgrade it to the max, or spend an arm and a leg on a brand spanker.
