Before we leave our house we have to paint the kitchen walls which are currently mushy pea green.
I have started painting them just bog standard matt white, on coat #2 and it looks like I will have to put a third coat on as you can still see some green underneath.
Does it sound normal that you'd have to put 3 coats of white on these green walls, or should I be slapping on shitloads of white paint?
Edit - the walls were green when we moved in before anyone questions our shit taste in wall colour for a kitchen.

depends on the white paint, is it a good quality, good covering paint or is it cheaper and hence thinner paint?

Generally you return rented properties how they were handed to you, so I assume Sam painted the walls green. That or have your deposit reduced for the pleasure.
Just roll it on nice and thick, Sam lol

Rich - standard big tub of Wickes white paint.
Brett - the walls were green when we moved in, but there were some holes in the walls which I've had to fill so obviously the walls need painting now.

You're probably going to have to buy 20 tins of white paint to cover it, compared to 1 tin of green

I'll put on a third coat tomorrow, CBA doing any more coats than that or spending more money on paint as I've got a massive tub of this white paint from Wickes here!

Once stuff is nonsense.
It can take up to 3 coats I'm afraid unless you are putting a colour on top of a mis coat but even then that could take 2 coats.
Must be a god awful green if its taken that many coats of emulsion

Well Oliver the landlord bought this house from the previous owner back in 2006 and he's done no decorating/improvements to the house whatsoever in that time, so I am guessing that horrible green paint on the walls would have been painted on there at least 5 years ago (and badly painted too I might add - overspills on covings/ceilings/doors etc).
I think it took 4 coats in the end, much swearing was involved in the whole process.

There is no easily solution to this problem short of putting wall paper over it. 3 coats is the norm.
It took about 5 coats to cover sarahs kitchen ceiling as it was such a state and that was with a few dash of stain block on the worst bits.
