Virgin have announced they are doubling speed free of charge, 10mb = 20mb, 20/30mb = 60mb 50mb=100mb 100mb=120mb
bt..
BT Infinity claims to deliver up to 40Mb speeds to customers.
"It is no surprise to see that Virgin are following our lead by doubling speeds. We announced we would do this for our fibre products last autumn and so they are trying to catch up with us."

120MB from what I remember (could be wrong) is about the max with the current channel bonding. Plus they'd need a fair bit more capacity at each UBR to allow for 200MB and they haven't finished upgrading a lot of the gear.

Sweet, was gonna upgrade to 50 when our deal swapped over but they wanted about £20 a month extra (on a deal with 20Mb atm)
Mine says October '12 - June '13
edit:
Important information
Cabled areas only. Fastest broadband download speeds widely available to consumers according to 2009 - 2011 Ofcom reports. 100Mb customers will see price-cut instead of speed doubling.

From what we've been told by management, we are scrapping 10, 20 and 30mb. Also planning wireless hotspots like BT do.

Never had issues here, apart from the soft-cap they apply.

It seems BT are only interested in upgrading people who's line speeds are already half decent. Virgin wont put cable in my area despite the fact half way down the road is cabled. However some hopefully good news is FTTC is coming sometime this year... Apparently

Gotta email from them saying something about the 100Mb service and then another email saying that was all wrong and they'll have good news for us in 2 weeks

Its how they send out threatening letters to their customers caught with "illegal" copyrighted material that grinds my gears, not the throttling.
If you've not yet been sent one and are actually downloading said material, its only a matter of time.

They'd do well to do that surely, given that all usenet traffic is SSL encrypted. Torrents are a differet story obv.
They'd be pretty certain you're downloading illegally but have no means to prove it, so they just dissuade people by throttling. Haven't heard anything about their letters for some time.

Do you have personal experience of VM sending you 'threatening' letters?
Still it's no different to other ISPs. And unless you happen to be in an area with an oversubscribed UBR, VM are probably one of the better ISPs for performance/speed.
Either way, in the 12/13 years of being with cable (since CableTel days) the only major issue we've had is where they suspended our 56k unlimited account for using the account on two telephones lines (which were in the same property). Nothing was mentioned in the T&Cs, we pulled them up on it and we got our account reactivated the same day.
luciaadr - Yup, it's been a fair few years since 'the letters' have been mentioned on Cableforums. As you say, it's one of the reasons behind the soft-cap.

Worried about illegal downloads, get VPN, 256 bit encryption is about £50 a year.
Well worth if you download a lot, to which I never do, but have a few friends with networking degrees, geeks I guess and that's what they use.

click the above link if you want to find out WHEN you are likely to get this upgrade, I apparently will have to wait until between october this year and June 2013 until the fibre optics in my area are upgraded so I'll have to make do with 50mbps untill then

Had fibre optics for a while but today is at least 8/9mb faster than usual.
