During the week, I tried to turn the tv on one morning and it was dead.

Changed the power lead and the red standby light came on then went out after a second.

Nothing else happens. Any ideas? It's a 42'' samsung plasma, about 4.5 years old, model: PS42A456P2D.

It's left on standby whenever it's not on, if that makes any difference.

Yeah power supplies are common on plasma tv's. It's possible to repair or replace them.

Crack it open and check for any blown caps, very common problem. But be fucking carefull. There is several big ass caps that hold 400+ volts and will give you a shock.

Thanks for the helpful advice.

Found someone who charges 25 quid to diagnose the problem and then takes that off the repair bill.

I won't be touching it myself, i'm terrible with anything electric.

Samsung TV's are common for the resistors to go which explains your problem.
It's about £3 in parts and u'll need a soilder iron.

If I had paid 5k for a tv I would splashed a few hundred quid on an extended warranty tbh

They fixed the caps issue years ago, well pre 2012. Wasn't just Samsung either, it affected anything that used them.

Hopefully you didn't pay that? Just about the value of the TV it self...

But if a new TV is going to be at least 5 times that then £100 is probably the best bet a week before xmas!

I guess that's a good way of looking at it...
Just can't help but think that pouring £100 in a 4.5 year old plasma is a bit like pissing your pants to keep warm.

I did pay it. As ian said, it's a week before xmas. I paid 600 quid for the tv and I was going to buy a new one next year. The one I want is about 500 quid so 100 quid to fix the telly for now isn't too bad a price in my eyes.

Did it actually cost 5K? that's the 2010 model, the 2011 top of the line only cost 2k.
