Short story short, washed my iPhone on a 49minute, 40degree wash this morning. Got it out, straight in rice. Not particularly bothered about e phone as I have insurance to cover it but I haven't backed it up in 6-8weeks and could do with retrieving numbers, photos, calendar entries etc. is there any way of doing it or do I have to hope that the rice dries it enough to allow me to sync it?

I've also downloaded a couple of albums from iTunes recently which I've not synced to my PC; can I get these back through iTunes or have I lost them too?

It's a nand flash so the only way of data recovery (without sending it off to a specialist to get the NAND dumped)

This is why iCloud can save your ass :-)

watched something on gadget show the other day its a bag called "save-a-phone" cost £15 and it worked perfectly on a drenched phone, but not sure whether you're meant to do it immediately

Missus did exactly the same.

I took the back off and binned the battery.

I then took the plates off revealing the connector blocks and got myself a tooth pik carefully cleaning the shorted contacts (could see the water marks).

Left the back off and filled a poly folder sleeve with dessicant from work, dropped phone in taped up and left for a week (probably didn't need that long).

Ordered a new battery off ebay £5.

Connected all back up and it fired up with no signs of washer life experience.

Week later the in call proximity sensor was badly corroded and fell off resulting in a black screen, but the phone was still working fine as could see the screen in a dark environment.

Eventually got a replacement under warranty with a trick or two on the water indicators.

Don't waste your time using rice.

My Galaxy S2 was saved by rice, but I still needed to go into the phone and scrub a load of contacts down with a toothbrush before it would work.

The S2 went on to die several months later due to another reason, well - at least I think so. I dropped it, nothing smashed and the phone just wouldn't boot anymore. Got it replaced on warranty which didn't cover water damage, so I guess they didn't check the litmus.

Ordered a new battery which will be here tomorrow and a tool kit, changed the rice for a fresh batch; removed the SIM port.

As a last resort you can remove the logic board completely and place it in Isoproply alcohol soluton overnight, this will remove all the crap off the connectors.

As said above, I'm not fussed about the phone-my insurance covers it but there is content that probably shouldn't even be on the phone which I would prefer to retrieve but would definitely need to remove before sending it off to the insurers. Worst case scenario, is there a way to permanently delete the content without being able to turn it on?

Battery is screwed and stuck down so be careful.

Stop using rice and order 100 sachets from ebay of desiccant its about £3.

Remove the back covers and clean with tooth pick then keep the back cover off and fill a poly folder sleeve with the dessicant, phone and tape it up tight.

Don't connect new battery up until its cleaned and had a spell with the desiccant.

Would be easier to explain if it was-I have contacts and photos that lest we say, are not for the general public-wouldn't want to send the phone off without clearing them off

If you can't boot it then you're best bet would be to do a 'proper number' (depends what your insurance allows) on it before getting a replacement, although i doubt anyone would go to the effort of attempting to fix it, or going OTT and down the forensic route, to get the data off.
Obviously if you can boot then backup (worth having multiple copies of the backup) and do a restore on the phone.

The phone repair company will not in any way shape or form care about your boat contacts or anything you shouldn't have taken a picture of at work. I imagine that they deal with so many they don't even care about naked pics anymore.
