This is a sad, sad day. Technology has effectively taken a step backwards due to ignorant consumers.

Just about every aspect of image quality is better on plasma.
Over the last couple of years LCD TV's have actually become worse, with the implementation of LED edge lighting and other compromises to getter a slimmer case and bezel.

OLED will be better when it becomes affordable though.

Is that were individual pixels can turn off? I.e blacks are actually black rather than a dark grey?

Every plasma I've looked at it has been poor quality unless standing 30ft away.

Yeah. Most of the advantages of plasma over oled are down to the tech being new and improving and cost.

OLED doesn't use a backlight, hence switching off a pixel results in pure black. However, Pioneer managed to do 'infinite black' in 2008 with one of their Kuro plasmas; unfortunately they fell out the industry before they could go into production with it.
OLED certainly has a lot of advantages over other display technologies but it's still in it's infancy and currently suffers from a few issues (mainly burn-in and the lifetime of the used blue phosphor), so it'll be a fair few years before we'll start getting reliable OLED displays.

OLED certainly has the potential to rival plasma, but in it's current form it simply doesn't.
Bang for your buck, there's absolutely nothing that can touch plasma, currently.

Its obviously going to depend on what you've gone from and to.
If your previous Plasma TV cost £400 and is 10 years old and you've just spent £1000 on a brand new LED, then I would expect that statement.
Put a top of the range LED next to the same Plasma and I think Plasma would look better.

What Bart said, basically.
Pound for pound, plasma is better.

Fair enough, I wasn't been a cunt I am just surprised to hear.
My plasma was about 800 5 years ago so wasn't the best i guess.
Guessing LED will take over shortly as it's still in its infancy?

£800 5 years ago should have seen you a decent enough TV. Though retention was a big issue back then.
But I bet your new TV is about 10% thickness of the old one.
LED isn't really in its infancy, though.
LED is just your good old fashioned LCD display with an LED backlight or, in most cases, edge light.
Everything about the transit from the traditional LCD TV's to the current LED models has been done purely for aesthetics.
That said, high end LED TV's are constantly getting better, but the cost is still way higher than a comparable plasma of same size and quality.
And it seems getting a uniform image quality across sizes of "60 and up is still a big issue.

Do you need to have a plasma 're-gassed' after X amount of years, as people were saying when they first came out?

you cant regas them, gases do escape and they usually quote an expected lifespan of the unit, this lifespan is normally when screen reaches around 50% brightness, or something similar to that.

That's also probably down to most LED TV's (at least in their factory settings) come with a massively over saturated picture and ridiculous brightness which people seem to think makes it look better.

The brightest ones stand out in the shops apparently, so places like Richer Sounds/Curry's/etc will just ramp up the settings on the set which they need/want to sell the most.
Get it home, then wonder why everybody is orange
First thing I do with a telly is trash the settings, then spend about 2 months driving my missus to a frothing rage because I'm stopping whatever we're watching to tweak something
The amount of time I visit friends/family to see their new 50" offering from LG or whoever is currently on offer, then have to spend a couple of hours lying about how good it looks, when in truth - their 20year old CRT looked infinitely better.

I've got a Panasonic 3D Plasma, it's hands down better picture quality than any LCD tv I've seen. I can't comment on LED as I've seen very few so far.

The LED you are talking about is just an LCD with an LED backlight instead of a CCFL.

Plasma has disadvantages too you know.
And why you bothered? It's only Panasonic, there's plenty of other reputable brands
