Whats the main advantages and disadvantages between them?

Are plasma's more or less reliable than LCDs?

Parents are meant to have an LG 32" Plasma turn up today and I dont really know much about them. Got a 26" LCD myself

Apparently Plasmas are only worth it over about 50".

Plasma screens don't last as long as an LCD, only a couple of years I think.

They're not repairable either iirc, you have to replace the whole thing.

modern plasma's aren't bad.

People used to say about screen burn etc.

But my parents have a modern Panasonic Viera 37 inch and it's fine, I can play games on it and don't get any burn.

Also plasma generally has better colour contrast and imo sometimes a sharper picture.

Think it's about 6 years till it reaches it's half life... So becomes 'half dim' ...

Basically it's brightness reduces over it's years of use. Personally when we got ours to have it at max setting would be stupidly bright, so put it on half brightness... looks spot on and hasn't dimmed at all yet.

In 6 years the dimming probably won't be that noticable, plus by then I'd be ready to get a new tv I think.

so whats screen burn exactly? they wont be playing games on it!

All I know is I told them to get a 32" Sony Bravia as everyone I know that has them rates them and they got persuaded by the salesman to go for the Plasma

I didn't realise you could get plasmas as small as 32"

My dad has an 50" panasonic plasma, absolutely brilliant picture, he done loads of research before buying one, best brand are pioneer followed by the panasonic which use pioneer components, as for screen burn thats a load of tosh on these brands anyway. Plasma's are well worth the money imo.

We have had our Sony 42" Plasma for about 6 years. No problem with it at all and it been used everyday for TV / XBox etc.

I'd say the amount of work my dad does (TV Engineer) is about 1 plasma repair to every 5 LCD's. This may come down to the amount of cheapo LCD's available now though

You'll be hard pushed to even breathe on the New Pioneer range with any LCD.

Why offer advice when you clearly know fuck-all about the subject.

What you have said is total bullshit!

How old is the Samsung mate?
Sounds like static image retention, not screen burn.
In the first 200 hours, plasmas should be 'run in', using low contrast and brightness. This helps prevent image retention in the future.

Panasonic plasmas are much better than Samsung all day long.

sorted. it doesn't say anything in the trouble shooting bit in the manual but we rang the helpline and they talked us through how to sort it. was in some sort of safe mode!

bit strange it doesnt tell you how to sort it in the manual.

The picture is brilliant. I can tell the difference in quality between it and my R74 Samsung. The plasma iss quite a bit better and the blacks are much deeper.

I need a new tv

Well then correct me as I thought this was the case. If you're just going to say that I'm wrong then I really don't care. Btw, by not repairable I meant you can't repair the screen.

If I'm wrong then fine, I've got the stones to admit that, but your comment was not helpful at all.

Odd one that, ususally if it run-in properly for the 200 hours, image retention should be almost non existant unless you leave it on a static image for ages.
I know my Pana plasma gave a bit of retention at first on my PS3 but did the run in and now its fine.

Do you find it retains mostly when playing games with static info on the screen or just watching TV?

How is an LCD panel repairable? Whereas a plasma panel not?
You cant repair either, you can replace either but not repair them.
All three of your 'comments' ended with 'I think' 'IIRC' and 'apparently', how is this supposed to help someone with a problem? I helped Matt out by telling him to ignore your comments!
