i dont think thay are trying to say its more secure than a passcode protection etc, but better than nothing which they say 50% of people (non-enterprise) currently use a sprotection. also the pay with touch is good too
Its not better than nothing if it doesnt work every time, or it requires fiddling around with finger positions. Nothing at least works everytime.
Passwords require fiddling about with fingers and incorrect typing too not to mention memorising them all, especially if you use secure ones.

4 digit pin is fairly reliable, and will work everytime if you arent a spaz
If the finger sensor doesnt work everytime even if it fails occasionally people will switch it off.

I've never used a pin as stated previously, I used one for about 2 days before getting sick of it. Agree if it's not reliable this will be just as much of a pain in the arse (and if you've read my posts, I'm more skeptical than anyone) but going off the first impressions of people who've used it (posted a couple of pages back) it looks to be fast and reliable.
Unlocking is clearly a minor benefit (not needing a password to buy stuff is a bigger overlooked benefit imo) and just the start compared to whats it's likely to be capable of going forward.

it'll really become more popular once the hardware is opened up to 3rd part apps and developers.
Only downside is it'll give the NSA a vast amount of fingerprint records.

The big questions is how secure is it. Its been said to be secure but how secure.
4 pin pass-codes would not be accepted by any major corp so the big question is does this meet their requirements.

Seems they are happy to buck that trend by releasing a plastic phone. Also two phones of the same model!

They’ve still got the passcode option if not so it’s not really an issue. As far as tech companies go, Apple take security pretty seriously, I can’t imagine they've would have replaced your Apple ID password with it if it wasn’t at least as secure at that.

Whether you believe them or not is another matter, but they said in the keynote that the fingerprint data is never backed up to the cloud. It never leaves your device.

They've already got everybodys 'face unlock' photos anyway.

Impressive, but its not a lot different from a 5. Just like the 5 wasn't a huge leap from the previous model.
the strategy of bringing out a new model every 6-12 months is like when Man United would bring out a new shirt every away game too!
The build up has nothing to do with Apple though, all the sent out is this:

Again, there's very little information around regarding the secure features AuthenTec is suppose to have. Until proven that a kid with a gummy bear (hence the term 'gummy print') can't dupe it, then it's purely a gimmick for consumers and shouldn't be use in enterprises (as Kyle mentioned, it shouldn't be used without two-factor anyway).
Four-pin passcode is still more secure though, plus it stops your mates gaining access when you're passed out

Apparently BiometricKit uses UIImage to store the fingerprint image.

Agreed, they only invited half as many attendees as normal and held it in their smallest venue. It's the public and media that have hyped it up.

Agree with the first point, that's why they left the passcode option.
You've also just said there are no details on it's implementation so how can you say it's less secure than a 4 digit pin which can be cracked pretty easily.
