Yeah, I go to 8k. Others go to it without deseemed rods, but for peace of mind and a bit of added safety it cant be bad.
I wouldn't fancy going over that, as you then need to worry about the rods, lubrication and the top end.

I had pockets cut into the standard pistons. Cant remember how deep, think it was 40 thou, which is about 1mm. The head was then skimmed to make up the compression.

Yes thats the seem alright. There is also one on the cap. Worth getting them weighed before and after (or at least balanced to make sure they are the same afterwards. One of the problems is that you cant really get the pistons off without risking cracking them. So you have to be careful with the swarf and make sure you clean them properly afterwards.
Second hand TB kits come up sometimes, keep an eye out on here and migweb.

The piston will come off, but it might well break.
Velos do it for about £70 IIRC. Mine were done DIY by a good mate of mine, not much too it tbh.

do you have to get the surface of the rod shot peened to harden the surface back up after, this is what i was told, otherwise the surface of the metal will be softer where you took the seam off?
We had to use a press the gugeon pins in and out of my pistons i couldnt get the fookers off!!!!
One of my gegeon pins was loose when the engine was runnin and cut a groove nearly straight through into the next bore, SCAREY!!
