yeah sony have shipped 400k ps3s to the us, and around 1 million worldwide but they are not selling that fast and only just over 200k have been sold, worldwide. you cant count every ps3 owner as someone who will use blu ray movies either as the majority bought it to purely play games on it. i would imagine the number of ps3 owners buying it to use as a blu ray player will be a simiar percentage to the number of 360 owners who will buy the hd-dvd add on

This makes interesting reading - this guy reckons both formats will die, its just a question of when.

yeah ive heard about that aswell ian, so many people are still more than happy with normal dvds at the moment.

I am told it costs about $3 million to set up a Blu-ray replication line and about $100,000 to do the same with HD-DVD. If you are projected to sell a million copies, guess which one is economically viable? This is a major hurdle and adds a non-trivial amount to the cost of the disks.

also Microsoft are now making £36 on every 360 sold, whereas Sony are losing over £120 per console due to production overheads

Not quite right. The 400K sold out at launch date in the US. That was the first batch which went straight out the door. They have since put another 600K into the US market (not nessesarily sold)

tbf playin a dvd on a 360 through a hd tv looks better than most normal dvd players due to the 360 upscalling it, the differance between that and a hd-dvd/bluray player isnt worth it imo yet due to price of the player and replacing all dvds with hd/bd

also total 360's sold is 10.4m with 5m live customers. Sony has a long way to go to push its blu ray. TBH i can see the majority owning a 360 and a Wii

yeah, $2 billion is actually pocket change to bill gates, he's probably donated that much to charity since the original xbox came out

Also shows to an extent that Microsoft didn't have profits in mind when making the 360, but to instead dominate the gamer market with the most users.
