I wouldnt recomend buying a flat for a first home. What you save in price ends up comming back in the form of service charges and ground rent paid to the freeholder

Never. There are some nice places around here. Ok, they're called 'apartments' and not flats. I'd be very picky all I mean is I'd be buying the smallest, cheapest property I could fine in order to limit costs in every area.
Fad - that is interesting to know
I even have the option of buying a complete dive as my dad would be able to rennovate and we could take time over it

Buy a dive of a house and renovate it to your own tastes, that way you know whats been done, whether its been done properly and also makes it that bit more unique when it comes to selling on, plus the experience of DIY will be invaluable! You are in a privileged position though if youve got the choice

I bought my house in Sheffield for £87k in 2005. I'm a really sad bastard so know that I have spent exactly £20,669.68 on renovation so stands me at about £108k.
Need about another £1k to totally finish the house inside, and spending £2k very shortly on new fencing all the way round my back garden (£2k sounds a lot but my garden is 80ft long so that's a lot of fencing).
Total cost will be about £111k, houses in my area were going for around £130k 18 months back (maybe a bit higher), but at the minute I reckon I would only get £115-£120k for it.
End of the day I've got a totally renovated house, done to an excellent standard so don't really care what's it's worth as I'm not selling

I paid £48K for my first place about 6 years ago then bought my second place for about £95K two years later and kept the first one to rent out.
Sold them both about 18 months ago for £91K and £132K respectively and purchased my current property for £249K which was converted by my family's business so I know the workmanship is of a high standard and the finish is exactly what I wanted.

and we're less densely populated; the airs cleaner, we have Gravy and mushy peas on our chips, plus in the right industries the wages are better.
I earn more than my uni peers who stayed on the Southcoast - the industry seems to pay a premium to get people to move away from the south. You should move up north
