Well I'm being properly fucked, I'm on 10% pay cut from an original £15k, my boss on the other hand got made redundant. I am only the only IT support staff and we're a very heavy online/IT business (online marketing, bulk emailing, etc).
My skillset far out weighs my pay, there's simply no jobs out there worth a move, I've applied for four, problem is alot of people with 5 - 10 + years experience are doing the same, and I only have 2.

This is the problem - i'm in the same boat. As much as i love my job currently, i'm not earning enough money to really live off. One of the reasons why i'm constantly down.
Just need to wait for the market to pick up i think.

Years ago I worked full time and did a bit of web design/network consultancy in the evenings and weekends. Probably not a good idea though if you're completely knackered from your day job.

I think general IT support monkeys are possibly expecting too much.
It's never going to pay much more than about £25k at the top end unless you are in London.
The best you can do is get into a big FTSE 100 company because at least it will be easier to progress your career.

Depends on the company mate, I'm in a very small company (3 people) making good money in the city and its mainly because a) make myself indispensable b) good&fast at what I do c) always ask for a pay rise.
As much as my title has been network engineer, the fact is I have got my hands dirty with everything here:
routing
switching
security
vpn
solaris admin
freebsd admin
windows admin
desktop shit
sort out the mail
quoting on kit
network audits
workstation BULLSHIT
network management systems/alerting
I do the lot, and every year I seem to add more responsibilities to my already long list.
I think the last time my title changed my boss told me I was the 'service desk manager', which to be honest is aload of bollocks when I'm in Hopton Street datacentre on a Saturday morning upgrading a Cisco 6500  - Most days I feel like a glorified IT support engineer.

Oh I do. The real kicker is I was going to get one then everyone had a 10% pay cut then 25% of the staff were made redundant.

Thing is, how many people have aimed to be in a career?
I know when I was a kid I wanted to be a programmer. Then did the required gcses to allow me to do a-levels, which in turn would allow me to go to uni and do a computer science degree.
If I hadn't of done the correct A-levels, I would not of been able to study my degree.
If I didn't have my degree, I wouldn't of been able to walk into a software developer position.
Same way I also did a placement year knowing this would benefit me getting a job.
- 90% of people today (IT people generally aren't as bad, thinking more of media / geography / history etc) basically just go through early life with no idea / care with what they want to do as a career.
They sit exams, and do a-levels but don't try to specialise in any field.
Then they get their a-levels and get ushered towards uni and its like... hmm 'dont know what to do'
so they do a pretty generic degree (or don't go).
Then end up thinking 'what do I want to do as a job'...
Since they haven't specialised in anything, they look to their interests.
They have an interest in computers, but without the quali's they go for a support role.
They then bitch about how they're on 16k when people doing software development are on 25-30k+. You have to realise that the people who are on good money, have probably got there by putting the effort in previously, either in education / real jobs (trying to work their way up).

I was always interested in electronics, I got interested in computers when my parents bought an 8086 in the late 80's, I was only about 8 when they got it but I was really interested in it, by the early 90's I had learned to use DOS, build Batch files and BASIC programs etc... I was getting £17k + company car (with personal use) for as a field engineer working across the country. Large company spread from Newcastle to Cornwall, and only 3 of us.
I was made redundant last week, so the company is down to 2 engineers.
I'm using the opportunity to relocate and try and get a role with more development potential, as there's fuck all where I live now.

uh huh, dont need a little computer science degree to be shit hot with computers, I'm defiantly doing alot better then pretty much most grads coming into IT
THOUGH I do agree that there are quite a few gimps who do some stupid IT cert at College to get a job in IT so they can be millionaires , I'm surrounded by these punks day and night and the fact is they just dont understand computers properly.
