Have you actually done the calculations for that? I looked at it and it is actually more expensive to buy a 3GS on PAYG and a simplicity contract with a data bolt on than it is for the contract.

why do they add a WiFi option into the tariff tables, to make it sound like you are getting something that is completely free anyway

You get to connect to The Cloud and BT Openzone, both of which aren't completely free.

After you've bought the phone for £440 or £540 it doesn't really work out too well.

for 32GB 3GS - going for 18 months, there is a saving of......£8.59 by going for the simplicity tarrif over the contract 45pm.
If you know you won't use all the minutes then the £30 contract is often cheaper than simplicity.

O2 are not stupid thus why there is so little difference

16GB 3GS 18-Month

PAYM: 89 + (18 x 40) = 809
PAYM: 18 x 50 = 900
PAYM: 18 x 80 = 1440
PAYG: 440 + (18 x 20) = 800

32GB 3GS 18-Month

PAYM: 179 + (18 x 40) = 899
PAYM: 89 + (18 x 50) = 989
PAYM: 18 x 80 = 1440
PAYG: 540 + (18 x 20) = 900

Do bare in mind with the £20 mentioned in the PAYG you get;

600 minutes, unlimited texts bolt on, unlimited data bolt on, WiFi bolt on and visual voicemail - everything the same as the contract offers but more minutes and texts.
