Honestly mate, you could get a brand new drive off ebay for £20, then just take it to a local guy and give him a tenner to sort it out. Not that I don't like money, but there'll be loads of guys local to you who do it and you'll save yourself money and time
EDIT: Go on ebay, type xbox repair, then restrict results to within 10miles of your house

You probably need to be good at soldering.
I'm rubbish at soldering on boards, can only do things like guitar cables.

No soldering. Only time I've soldered an xbox is to JTAG it. DVD drive repair is literally 2 cables and programming the drive with the key.
Could be managed if you had a torx screwdriver and a free sata slot in your PC so you can program it.

Of course, there's always tweaking the POT, which will extract more life out of the dvd drive. It was discussed in more detail in Sam's thread the other week, which was basically the same question as yours Jambo.
http://www.corsasport.co.uk/board/viewthread.php?tid=596921
You'd need a torx, small flat head screwdriver, a multimeter and a steady hand.
In my opinion, as I said to Sam, if you're still in 3yrs RROD warranty then just overheat the bastard and get the board and drive replaced for free. It'll last you a couple more years then.

Can you get modded cases like that for PS3? I've searched around but can't seem to find much...they look pretty cool

But a 4GB slim is only £120ish and you can stick your elite HDD in it. Job done.

I don't have an elite hd I sold it, didn't realise they are swappable?! I have the old old premium one iirc.

They're not directly swappable as such, but with a trusty torx screwdriver you just open the HDD casing from the old xbox, take out the SATA HDD in there then slot it into your slim. It's a big scam really. Exactly the same drives, just different shells as per xbox model.
EDIT: ...and PLEASE nobody pipe up about how much space is necessary for your xbox. I don't care, as I can get by with 4GB. End up going down that road on here every bloody time I mention the HDD's

It is for someone who only ever has a couple of games in rotation at a time, like myself. Once I stop playing games, like the old CODs then I simply delete the downloaded content. The license is always retained on xbox server so it can be re-downloaded if required.
I only stuck in a 20GB drive because BO won't render and upload videos in theatre without one.
Oh, and I know you did that deliberately before you say I bit It was you who was giving me grief last time round.

You had to upgrade to 20gb.
4gb is stupid and ps3 is better

I've stated why, and that's because the 4GB in the slim isn't a HDD, but a memory unit, otherwise it wouldn't have been an issue.
PS3's are ace, I agree. Dunno how I've managed without one.

Gays.
I've just watched a bunch of how to's online on mending the DVD drive one reckons it's the mechanism that doesn't spin properly, the other that the laser is getting stuck and won't move as it should.
Either way, case looks quite easy to fit. Might give it a go as it would look super duper sexy in chrome

Assuming it's not making any strange noises, and just opening then trying to read as normal but saying open tray still, then it won't be either of those. It'll be the laser dying like has been said tbh
Slim is soooo much better imo still, think you're silly spending money on one of the old ones, especially buying in brand new. From what you're willing to spend, you could easily get one.
