I can quite easily notice the difference between VGA and HDMI on the EB-W8/10's we have at work

you wont notice any difference between hdmi, dvi, or even vga for that matter
Usually you will when you compare analogue VGA against HDMI/DVI (essentially the same with regards to video), so it's worth having a PJ than accepts a digital input.

the vga argument is exactly that, im still not convinced the human eye will really notice any difference unless you are running a massive long vga cable or its broken,
dvi though, is a non argument

when you start getting anal over image quality on projectors, the surface you are projecting on to will make far more difference then the cable you are using, as long as the res's remain the same

You always get noise on a VGA cable unless it's like 2cm long. HDMI much better

I can tell the difference on a monitor, never compared via a projector though.

For 4K content obviously, already being trial broadcast in the UK.

what kind of timescale is that though john? and are we talking quite a few years in which by that time a 4k projector would be a few hundred

It will probably be ages before it's broadcast, you will have 4K content by next year though, the RED Epic cameras everyone uses already records at 4K.

Still looking at getting a projector myself, when buying second hand can you really ever trust the bulb hours? Since anyone can reset the counter whenever they like...

Must be very minor then because of the 6 screens on this desk when connected to my old computer, 3 were VGA and 3 were DVI and they were completely indistinguishable to me sat here for hours per day.
The only way I could tell is the source name on the menu or the fact that helpfully, some of the menu options aren't present using DVI. In that regard, VGA was preferable.

Also, I sold a perfectly working 800x600 with thousands of hours remaining for £45 and bought a 1024x768 for £100 and its fine.
Bulb life is a concern but you're not really talking about it being on all day every day like a school one would be, mine only gets a few hours per week at most, which even on a well used lamp will still get me a few years.

There is loads of shite. Lots with claims of being 'only a few months old' and only 'a handful of lamp hours' with screenshots of low numbers on the bulb but for all I know they could be 3+ years old with 1000s of lamp hours.
It wouldn't be that much of a concern but they seem really temperamental with people constantly sending them off so would like one with proof of purchase and some remaining warranty however they're really hard to come by.
Also, although most claim 2-3000 lamp hours there are loads of bulbs failing at <300 hours on AVF.

So I've had my projector about a month now, absolutely loving it, best £250 spent in ages, put over 100 hours on it already and only use it for xbox gaming and films.
Already tempted to upgrade to a 1080p one but the Mrs will kill me
Looking at getting a screen as been projecting onto a magnolia wall/door at the moment.
I noticed that when playing xbox the aspect ratio is 16:9 (i think) and when watching films its the same width but half the height (ish).
How do you go about this with a screen? Buy a 16:9 one and then have the borders too big for films?

Same as with a TV really.
16:9 screen and every other aspect ratio will be letterboxed.

I guess you're right, is it werid that I've never really noticed that on a normal TV before
I guess the bigger screen emphasises it more.
