Any way, i'm derailing this thread.......but i agree with everyone else, iPad is limited in functionality and isn't a replacement for a computer.

Once Microsoft Office comes out for the iPad, that will make it alot better for going with a PC, especially sales related jobs, people on the road etc... still not a replacement though.

Although not Microsoft, you can use the iWork apps and they open/save Microsoft files (supposedly).

Yes I noticed that
Do you think this is the case for say OpenOffice/LibreOffice files on different platforms too?

The new office 15/2012/whatever seems to integrate tightly with online services.
Would be more surprised if they don't bring out office for iPad. New office also has features like picking up the document where you left off on another device, which would tie in nicely.

No idea Will, you get 5GB free and any more space you pay for.
I can access anything in my iCloud account (mainly pics from my iPhone etc.) on other devices like my MBP and I don't have to pay to access it.

Have to pay for iTunes match and extra storage.
The predecessor, MobileMe, was subscription based from what i remember.

i love my iPad but it still shits itself every now and again and closes apps. i wouldnt trust it to type up an essay on word or pages. i certainly wouldnt use it to replace my laptop. when i got it i used it for 8 months solid for internet browsing etc, the laptop was used for typing uni work, torrents and dj'ing. however then i got rid of my windows laptop and bought a macbook pro and have barely touched the ipad since

iTunes Match is different to iCloud - if you've got all your music stored on a computer somewhere then you can just let the subscription expire and you'll still have your music. Not sure what happens with iCloud though, thought is was a backup thing anyway.
For non-enterprise stuff there are a few apps out there that virtualise MS Office and let you store your data on Dropbox. I don't think an iPad is practical for that sort of work though. Get a laptop or desktop if you need to sit and type stuff, get an iPad if you need to consume media.

I might wait for the new iMac to come out (apparently this is imminent), then either get the old one cheap, or get the new one.

I've got a desktop PC and an Android tablet, and would say that a tablet will never properly replace a PC or Laptop. I was using the tablet on holiday for coming on here and Facebook etc, but there's just nothing like a proper computer. What's handy with my tablet (which I'm guessing you can't do with an iPaidtoomuchforthis) is it has a cable thing that is male mini-USB on one end for connecting to the tablet, and felame USB on the other, so you can connect stuff like a USB flash drive.
There are several Office-type apps on Play Store, but again they're not exactly going to be as extensive as proper Office. Even if MS do release a proper Office app for the iPad then it still isn't going to do everything the proper version does.
