I could have done with John being at a house I went to a few weeks back actually. Reversed polarity from the incomer which nearly killed a 'DIYer' lucky for me I knew what to look for before I touched anything.

I couldn't tell you exactly what it does without googling it. I could however tell you one wasn't working, without any tests other than another one does work.
I would also find out how to test one if required, then I would know how to do it the next time 
Reverse polarity wouldn't have nearly killed me, I'd be sure it's completely dead before touching anything, wouldn't have just relied on it being switched on the live side.

This was changing a light bulb on an old es lamp holder so you wouldn't have checked. Luckily the old guy in question didnt break his neck when he fell off his ladder after getting a belt.
Don't forget to buy your test equipment for when you find out how to test your RCD btw.

So what you mean is you have to buy a bit of kit. If that was considerably more expensive than the potentially faulty bit of course of just buy a replacement bit. I've never said I have all the gear, that doesn't change my basic understanding and being able to use a multimeter.

It's also unbelievably easy how an RCD works, as with most electrical stuff, if current being supplied doesn't equal current returned, there's a fault somewhere so it trips.

FFS, firstly, my name was brought up in here first, I hadn't said a word.
Secondly, if something doesn't work, you replace it, don't change anything else and it all then works, swap the faulty bit back in, it doesn't work, good bit back in, it works, it's the faulty bit that's faulty.
That applies for anything, whether it's amazingly complicated high school level electricity or not.

How do you know when an RCD doesn't work? When you get electrocuted in the shower and die as a result of it not disconnecting within its designated tripping time?

If I was electrocuted in the shower I'd obviously be dead, no need to specify the dead part when that's what the word means.
You and conspiracy nut can go on all you want about needing an electrician to change a light bulb. I wouldn't want a guy who's posted some of the stuff he has doing any of my electrical work, I'd be much more confident in my own ability.
Anything you know, at all, about electrics, I can find out if I have to. I don't need the information in my head because I'm not doing it day to day.
Because I don't know the regs, which I would if I had to, it's not difficult to read a book, does not say anything about my ability to troubleshoot a problem and work out if something is broken.

I had a problem with my rcd. Drove to screwfix and bought a new one, fitted it in 15 mins and no more problem.
For the cost replace the rcd, it might fix it but if not you can rule it out.
