To get the best out of the 1.6 16v u need to bin the very restrictive inlet manifold.

these threads always turn into a debate with no real answers- so....
if you were in my position what would you do
...I HAVE AROUND £3K TO SPEND ON INITIAL BUYING OF ENGINE, BREAKS AND FITTING KIT, AND WOULD WANT IT PROFESIONALLY FITTED........I WOULD THEN BE PREPARED TO SPEND ANOTHER 2K OVER NEXT COUPLE OF YEAR.....CAR WILL BE USED EVERYDAY FOR AT LEAST THE NEXT 2 YEARS.....CAR WILL BE STRIPPED OUT AND USED FOR OCCASIONAL 1/4 MILE BUT MAINLY CIRCUIT DAYS
WHAT ENGINE WOULD YOU PERSONALLY GO FOR

1.6 16v without a doubt imo (and i've got a 2.0litre, so :wink: )
I'd still get Lee Mitchell to do the conversion too

im certainly leaning towards the 1.6 as well- i just reckon it will fit my plans for the car better than a 2.l

Handling is just heavier. Car wants to slide forward when u wanna turn (when ur pushing it, i've not tried to push it yet and can still feel the front end trying to go straight on).
Just gives u lots of understear

X16XE Came in teh 1.6 Sport Corsas and later Corsa GSi. Would try to source an earlier C16XE though as they seem to respond much better to mods, but are older and higher milage.
Got sold a dodgy engine off of Steve106GTi. An X16XEL 100bhp sh1t thing.
I got my current engine from and Astra GTE but drove the car before the engine came out.
Lee could prob source and engine.

There are 3 1.6 16v engines.
C16XE = 109bhp
X16XE = 106bhp
X16XEL = 100bhp but higher torque lower downt he rev range compared to the XE engine.

I find it slightly amusing that is making such a big deal about handling like its the most important thing, is going to keep their Spax kit, rather than go for coilovers...
At the end of the day, I would go for the 2ltr... 'ok its a track car' - but its not for racing on a track, its for having fun and I think you'll still have plenty of fun with a 2 ltr in there on a track.
At the end of the day the 1.6 only puts out 109 bhp! and that on its own will be pretty disapointing... ok so you want to mod it but you'll be spending lots of money and may not be that pleased with the results(not getting as much as you had hoped from mods). You only need to look at patrick's efforts to improve his 1.6 and how he wished he had just gone for a 2ltr.
ok there's insurance, but at the end of the day the amount you'd spend on the 1.6 to get it close to what the 2 ltr would be with a few minor mods would be far more than the extra you'd pay for insurance on a 2ltr rather than 1.6...
go for 2ltr, (don't listen to me, I unlike daimo haven't got one...) ...

PAUL J- AT WHAT POINT DID I SAY I WAS GOING TO KEEP MY SPAX- just asked if i would need to upgrade at the time of conversion- i will get coilovers eventually
......also i find it "slightly amusing" that someone who chooses to type 11 lines in a thread, seems to have no grasp of punctuation.
quote..."At the end of the day, I would go for the 2ltr... 'ok its a track car' - but its not for racing on a track, its for having fun and I think you'll still have plenty of fun with a 2 ltr in there on a track. " wtf
im looking to gradually build up to around 160bhp and from the replies ive got so far 1.6 seems like a more reliable option that will handle better
still like the idea of out of a box power 2l provides- trying to make my mind up

hehe, well sorry... I, like you, were typing fast and was talking on msn at the same time. Every time I get distracted and return to the post I had to remind myself what I was saying.
Well, from what I could tell it looked liked you were asking if it was ok to keep your Spax. I just assumed as a way of saving money.
You won the lottery? Spending all this money on the engine (not only conversion, but insurance and mods) - then having to shell out for coilovers and its even more.
Just because someone was opposed to your '1.6' idea, you seemed to get very upset. I met you in MK, you seemed alright then. Chill man.
