how much better will HD DVDs movies look when compared to say a DVD running on a decent DVD player through component inputs?

HD-DVD movies will look amazing compared to normal dvd's.
The 1080p ones have 4 times as much information as a normal dvd.
That only upconverts though Nath, which isn't quite the same.

No bother, still bound to be an improvement. Had that DVd player for a while so figured it'd be out of date soon enough. Plus for only £120 its still a good player imo.

both of those just have upscalers in them, wouldnt have wasted the cash tbh as the picture wont be any better than (upscalers usually make the picture worse) a typical DVD player
Should have saved the pennies for a decent DVD player (Arcam, Cyrus etc) with component outputs as it would have given the best possible picture going

Well its a damn sight better than what I had before so it really doesnt bother me, especially as I got it 7 months ago and got it for a reasonable price. I'm not that 'hardcore' when it comes to this stuff.

Well i havent ordered it, but i think i will as its only cheap and better than the PS2 i use anyway (heard it only runs at 680x420)
IMO i dont think there is much difference between component and HDMI, but i have an HDMI port so might aswel use it

Its doubtful that you will notice any differences between the two connections whilst playing a DVD source (if your using decent quality cables!) - HDMI is only useful (apart from having 7channels of audio) when your playing HD material due to the extra bandwidth over component.
And tbh, different transports and electronics in the DVD player will make up a lot of the outputed picture...

Wooo got it set up, i'll take some pics in a sec. TBH the quality through the DVD player, upscaler or not, is very good. Can't fault it and its definately good enough for me.
