Its one of those. I would spend another 10$ and go for 512MB ram version

Version A = 128mb, B = 256mb. They were testing it on the B variant as XBMC won't run at all on 128mb.
Obviously more ram would be useful but it showed that there was 90mb odd free and it's currently running on debian and not fully optimised whereas they hope knock out version of buildroot version specifically optimised for the hardware.

noshua - Yup, CEC for controlling devices (eg: PS3 Slim can be controlled by your remote) using a single remote (usually TV remote). You can already get CEC to USB devices already that work with XBMC - Pulse 8 being one of them

Even optimised its going to be limited to what extras you run can run to make it look and run better.

It will be interesting to see how it runs the non-standard mkvs etc.

Will also be interesting to see if it can run the iplayer.

Apparently file format is good from what's being mentioned on the forums. But yes, i think flash/silverlight (needed for iPlayer/Netflix etc) support could be a real issue but you never know; if they can compact and optimise XBMC enough then there may be enough processing to handle this.

That CEC technology is quite amazing, haven't heard about that before. Would be quite useful having that, especially if running XBMC like in that demonstration video.

R.E. CODECS: can you not install whichever ones you need, seeing as it's just a Linux 'box'? Or are things more complicated than that?

Processor probably isn't powerful enough for software codecs, well HD stuff anyway.

The supported codecs will be done in hardware.

It's been discussed on the forums a bit, but video CODECs have been confirmed as MPEG4 and h.264 - would that play MKV's then?

MKV is just a container, can have various codecs inside.

Thought MKV's only had h.264/X264 video in them. So I guess it can play the right kind of MKV.

Usually MKV containers are *264 but I have seen a few odds codecs used in the past within MKV's.

There was a post on the forums where someone said they had the PI playing Xvids/Divx; can't for the life of me remember where the post is though. Hopefully one of the XBMC developers/testers will confirm that.

All the "proper" HD rips on the Internet are encoded in 264 so yes, it'll play them

That's good, I accidentally deleted my collection and have been downloading new x264 MKV's in anticipation.

No reason why it shouldn't open an ISO - can't XBMC make use of them?

Depends if the Arm ('software) can handle decoding MPEG2 streams and the current theory is probably not although Xvid/Divx should be doable (albeit not HD). Technically the GPU can but it isn't licensed to do so although there is the rumour that a 'media' variant of the PI will be release with the GPU licensed for a range of codecs.

There is a pretty decent Slashdot article if you Google that has a lot of people talking about Codecs, likewise there is a decent post on the XBMC forums about the PI that's worth reading.

you have to bare in mind, your buying a miniture PC here, not a media player.
Its aimed at developers, not the media player market.

You can install what OS / Software you like, so what file format it plays will be mainly dependant on the software (I know thats not strictly true).

*dom beat me to it.
