So in it's most basic sense, if you aren't using the app, it aint in memory and it isn't using battery power or processor time.
So when you push Safari to the background and it's not being used (so a webpage is loaded but there is no streaming content playing etc) it's state is saved to disk and it's removed from ram until you resume use of the app?
I still don't understand why Apple implemented true multi-tasking or even something a little close to Backgrounder which doesn't need developers to recode their apps to support multitasking.

That's how I understand it working. An app can only use the 7 background API's and apart from that, it's on disk. (They're Audio, VOIP, Location, Push Notification, Local Notification, Task Completion, Fast App Switching (copied and pasted from another site BTW)).

Do you understand the issue that some people are reporting and why the cover is supposed to help?

Yeah, or as I understand it the phones aren't displaying the correct number of bars and holding the phone at the bottom left hand corner (on the break) is interferring with the signal as the metal band is the antenna.

Yep, so basically the case prevents the 'death grip' problem. It wont improve the signal generally.

Oh, I was expecting it to prevent the loss of signal

If an app is not currently being used then it is no in memory and will not be consuming any extra power. When you close/switch app it's state is saved to disk and it is removed from memory. This is with exception to apps which are using one of the 7 multitasking API's, but that's a little more complex..
Thats the theory but in practice there is certain way more going on. Many people including myself have found battery life is significantly improved by making sure you have no apps in the "multi-tasking" list. I don't know why but the battery goes does quicker if there is a full list in comparison to an empty one.

I'm getting pissed off with my IP4 now.
When I plugged my phone into the laptop earlier itunes asked if I wanted to update to the latest software.
I accepted and half way through it crashed and gave an error code 9.
It is a connection error, So i've used all 4 USB ports, switched off all anti virus and firewalls. Yet I still get the error half way through restore now.
The phone is stuck in recovery mode so is a fucking expensive paperweight.
I've phoned the support and they just said try what i have already or a different pc.
None of this has worked so I tried booking into a genuis bar at apple and the next appointment is Friday.
I won't be buying any apple products in the future.

You tried a manual update? Basically you download the firmware (http://www.iphoneheat.com/2010/06/download-ios-4-firmware-for-iphone-ipod-touch/) then in itunes right-mouse-click restore, it'll ask you to open a file, select the firmware you just downloaded and it should start updating/recovering your phone.
I've has issues with the downloading of the firmware within iTunes that has just left my iPhones is recovery mode.
Other option is to completely remove itunes and all apple softare (like apple update, quicktime etc), run something like CCleaner (both the cleaner and registry cleaner), restart system and reinstall iTunes.

I had the same problem, thought I had bricked the phone.
I plugged it in my mates PC and it worked fine
Also look for a program that will kick it out of restore mode, something like Recboot as that will reset it and you can update it again.

Already tried it on the PC, downloaded itunes and plugged my phone in. I'm getting the same error message at the exact same stage of the reboot.
To say i'm fucked off with the thing would be an understatement.
